I cannot support tourism in Montana until officials protect wild buffalo rather than track and kill them. I am so disgusted, and it makes my blood boil. But they just dont care, it is purely money that they care about, but I am going to keep fighting, keep writing. I remembering writing in protest many years ago to the local government, to be told that I should be happy that this exports is going on, as it was bringing money to the farmers, then it was bringing money to the smaller towns. February 18, 2007 3:29 AM I have also been writing to McGauran (and his predecessor) and Howard since 2003,the Cormo Express disaster,receiving at first the stock platitudes trotted out repeatedly,but nothing to my last letters,not even the dubious courtesy of an acknowledgement. They simply do not give a damn. McGauran was on the radio a few days ago,one of his fairy-tales was that we can't send frozen carcases to Egypt because they don't have refrigeration(!) A bloke then rang and said he had worked in Egypt for 4 years,in FROZEN FOOD distribution,and that they have abundant refrigeration over there.So McGauran doesn't let the truth get in the way of the insatiable greed for profit. There is NO way these animals will ever be treated with any vestige of compassion in this loathesome business,as long as it's "live export,the only acceptable answer is for them to be killed relatively "humanely"here (I'm under no illusion that it is any picnic here,either,but compared to what they go through over there,it has to be infinitely less barbaric)and send the frozen carcases.We've done it before,and they accepted. Live exports also costs thousands of Australian jobs,when it was brought back a few years ago,many workers were left jobless. I know how you feel,Eleni,this disgusting business is what first made me realise that I can't just say "how awful,"and not at least TRY and do whatever I could.And isn't it the most frustrating thing in the world! The only reason I said it may not have anything to do with Demanding tougher penalties for Animal Abuse is that I didn't want it to be labelled inappropriate for this group and be taken off. Also being the first time I have done anything like this I wasn't sure I was going about it the right way but it seems to have worked out. Samantha O.	Demanding tougher penalties for live export cruelty. February 17, 2007 6:12 AM Hi Everyone.I am writing in response to Eleni's post re:live exports. I have signed all these current letters,fwds,etc. This has EVERYTHING to do with tougher penalties. These current videos were from December 2006,less than 8 weeks ago! I wrote with complaint in 2003 (re: the 60 Minutes report on live exports with regard to the Cormo Express which had it's 'cargo' of suffering sheep on board for weeks,)because I was mortified by the horribly barbaric treatment of sheep and also of cattle and NOTHING has changed or improved. Minister McGauran is saying we must stick with trading with Egypt because we can teach them humane treatment of animals and they would only take up trade with other countries otherwise.WHAT RUBBISH!!.The only concern the Minister has is the economic losses that could arise. Australia has had decades to improve conditions for sheep and cattle arriving in Egypt or the middle-east and even after the damning 2003 report was aired they have DONE NOTHING to improve conditions at all! If Animals Australia had not brought this recent video to air things would have continued on exactly the same.This appalling industry runs purely on profits with no regard to animal welfare so I have several proposals.Firstly if live exports are to continue then the ships must be outfitted so that all animals are in a climate controlled environment,so that they ALL arrive alive AND in reasonable condition.They MUST have access to clean water at all times and their enclosures MUST be cleaned out daily and vet care on hand at all times ;all deaths MUST be documented by the vet;no more throwing live sheep into the macerator or overboard. NO MORE CRUELTY!!!! Secondly I would like massive fines in place to ensure corners are not cut to save costs and therefore prolong suffering of travelling livestock. These animals are expected to give their lives up for human profits so they deserve a minimum standard and a small cost to ensure that their lives are humane and normal for the short time they are permitted to exist. A fine range of $5000 --$10 000(depending on state of each animal) for each animal that does not arrive or is dead on arrival. Fines for animals in poor condition,and for non-compliance with cruelty laws. Fines of $500 000 to $10 000 000 for these non-compliances including overall condition of stock,conditions of their stalls,feed & water facilities, containment etc. Fines for mishandling of stock on arrival, by the purchasers. These huge fines will be enough deterrent to ensure the money is spent to improve conditions for animals and ensure their humane treatment. The real threat of extreme financial cost is the only way improvements will be made. This is the only way live exports can possibly continue to the satisfaction of treating animals humanely. Also and most importantly the R.S.P.C.A.s five freedoms and cruelty laws as imposed by the R.S.P.C.A. for domestic animals are to cover ALL animals including livestock which will end up as a food product, intensively farmed animals and laboratory animals. To label an industry as exempt from cruelty because it raises economic growth and profits is ridiculous and absurd.If a being has a spine it suffers intense pain as we all well know,so to let atrocities be performed on 'food' animals' is the height of cruelty KNOWING that these animals feel equal pain to any other mammal including ourselves. THIS MUST STOP! It is not feasible to have an exemption of this type.It is akin to watching a murder and not reporting it, it makes you equally as guilty. Even though you did not actually extinguish the life of another youself you have condoned the action because you did nothing to prevent or rectify it. So the laws that are in place with regard to livestock,lab and intensively farmed animals are ridiculous in the extreme. You are enabling mass cruelty,knowing that these procedures are particularly cruel and allowing them to go ahead under the guise of this ridiculous clause. No other case with these elements WOULD hold up in a court of law with regard to any other legalities so we need to stop this contrived evilness which is so absurd and do the right thing. Ensure humane treatment including anaesthetic for painful procedures and ensure humane treatment with regard to animal handling here AND overseas and ensure the ability of all animals to live their natural lives without extended unnatural confinement. If any handling or killing procedure of any animal is illegal in Australia then it is illegal at the disembarking country of the livestock. STOP condoning these cruel methods by turning a blind eye to the exsanguination of live conscious animals and all the other atrocities committed overseas that would be a criminal offence here, even under the flimsy laws of code of practice. If these basic standards CANNOT be met the the live export trade will need to be discontinued and replaced by refrigerated and or frozen meat products. It is time to be honest tell the truth and the government admit it has let mass cruelty be committed against industry animals in the name of profit and economics. It's been on current affairs several times and this week as well. Thousands of defenseless Australian sheep being dragged, bound with rope, shoved into car boots, tied onto car roofs, and thrown trussed on their backs into trucks. In Cairo, investigators documented terrified sheep having their throats cut while fully conscious. This is normal, widespread practice in abattoirs and private homes throughout the Middle East. The Howard Government and Australia's live exporters send millions of animals each year to this fate. As a result, millions of people in the Middle East believe Australians approve of this brutal treatment of animals due to our willingness to export animals to their countries. The cruelty and suffering Animals Australia documented in Egypt directly contravenes the 2006 formal agreement between Egypt and the Howard Government to treat Australian animals in accordance with international standards. This 'Memorandum of Understanding' was triumphantly publicized to reassure all Australians that the welfare of Australian animals would be protected. The Sariyer Shelter is run by AIG, a sub-contractor of Biosav that was given the job of neuter and release in Istanbul by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality as a result of a legal tender. The June 2004 law stipulating that neuter and release is the only permitted method of solving the stray dog issue was put into effect since July. The boroughs are obliged to handle the problem and to have a good pound where the neutered dogs can recover. The animals have to be registered and returned to their original surroundings. Because the municipalities cannot organize all this by themselves, they have called for tenders. For a part of Istanbul the work was contracted out to a pesticide company. The situation is abominable. A lot of dogs die and sick dogs are just turned back on the streets. Cases are known of a mother dog that was captured to be sterilized when she was already giving birth. A dog with a hernia was sterilized and returned to the streets, the same was done to a dog with a broken hipbone. Also, there are no records of where the dogs were picked up, so they are just put on the streets anywhere; this causes a lot of fights. The dog's injuries were so severe, the veterinarian called to the scene had to euthanize the animal on the spot. The dog's legs were bound together with duct tape, and its head was wrapped in a bag. There was a tow rope around the dog's neck. The dog's neck, pelvis, back and skull were fractured. Investigators believe that the six or seven year old dog had been beaten prior to being tied up and hitched to a vehicle, then dragged for blocks. There was no apparent motive to the crime. Daniel Charles Haskett, 19, of Didsbury Alberta has been charged under the Criminal Code with injuring/endangering an animal and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal. His 17 old accomplice, whose identity is protected by the Youth Criminal Justice Act, is charged with the same offences. We Want Truth in Fur-Labeling (Petition) 5:08 AM The Fur Products Labeling Act requires that any garment made of fur list the type of animals used and the country in which the animals were killed. However, a loophole in the law exempts garments made with up to $150 worth of fur from being labeled. This is bad news for consumers because without proper labeling, they don't know whether a product contains real fur or faux fur – particularly when today's processing techniques can make it nearly impossible for a person to tell the difference. And it’s not just scraps—animals are killed specifically for fur trim, which is commonly exempt under the loophole. What’s more, with rabbit pelts valued at as little as $5, an unlabeled garment can easily contain fur from multiple animals. U.S. Representatives Mike Ferguson (R-NJ) and Jim Moran (D-VA) have introduced H.R. 4904, The Truth in Fur Labeling Act of 2006, which would close this loophole. This bill would also be an added layer of protection against any illegal dog and cat fur coming into the country as trim on unlabeled garments.
