WELCOME! July 28, 2006 2:31 PM

Welcome to 'Inside The Lives Of People On Minimum Wage'!

I have been there, more than once.

I have also lived way below the poverty line when I was studying in high school and university, from 1991 to 2001.

I decided to make this group because:

No one should have the stress of living pay check to pay check.

No one should have to lose everything because they owe money for Medical Bills, or because they are ill and can no longer work. A person can lose EVERYTHING in a couple of months! Medical debt is the number one reason for financial bankruptcy in the USA!

Financial strain is the number one reason relationships end up in divorce. Family break up is not a great legacy to leave our children, especially if the reason is money.

Our society does not value the important work that people living on minimum wage provide. Our attitudes need to change! We need to make decisions about the kind of society we wish to live in!

What we need to do:

We need to tell our stories.

We need to change the public perception of minimum wage earners, and this includes minimum wage earners.

We need to raise the minimum wage to what people can actually LIVE on and to provide health benefits to all!

Let's do this together!

I've been a volunteer worker for 35 years. Zero pay but all kinds of perks and fringe benefits works out pretty well.  [ send green star]

I was a single parent with my first daughter.,and she was around 4 years old and we lived in a one-room "apartment."I cooked huge amounts of rice, bought pizza, and coldcuts, one day the manager,a woman herself, said if my daughter hadn't stopped crying, she'd kick us out. Why do some people have to make it worse when you're already in your worse living situation? Plus of course,we were living in the Tenderloin which added to the misery. Thankfully, somehow,in the Tenderloin,I guess people are surprisingly more understanding, I remember one day,my daughter's Indian nursery School teacher invited me and my daughter to her house.it was the nicest thing that ever happened, plus Saint Anthonys' Church was a couple of blocks away,so sitting on their benches was spiritually helpful, and I also did volunteer there for a while serving food. I also had a boss who owned a housekeeping company, with mercy he and his female companion, gave my daughter that Huge Mouse toy, (mouskiwhitz, spelling),and another customer gave my daughter those talking-animal toys plush, which were popular then. ,me some clothes, which did some people I worked for as a housecleaner.  I met more compassionate friendly people then when I was poor, than now in this suburb.  I still love this new home and life, but I will always remember the people who helped me the most when I was down.

Thanks for the invite, Heidi July 28, 2006 8:30 PM

You dear, sweet, compassionate, gorgeous woman! It was so kind of you to invite me. Since I have spent my entire working life earning only the minimum wage, and sometimes less, I would be glad to lend my voice and experiences here.  [ send green star]

Thanks for the invite, Heidi.  I know about working (two persons) at minimum wage and having less than those on Social Assistance (seriously, what is the monetary incentive to get off assistance?!).  It really makes you question why you're working your butt off at the time.  It turns out to be worth it, but it doesn't help the ego or your esteem while going through it.  [ send green star]

I've signed the petition seriously requesting at least,$15.00 per hour for all citizens of all educational levels. Everyone deserves better wages.

My name is Angelica.

I have 3 children and I am fortunate my parents helped me out because my deadbeat exhusband did not pay a cent for these kids for over 6 months until he discovered he could go to jail.

Minimum wage sucks.  I am blessed with going back to school so perhaps some day I can make enough money to make it all on my own with my 3 children.

Thank you for the invite.  As a recruitment consultant I constantly battle to persuade employers to pay a fair wage to their employees.  A task that can sometimes be thankless but a cause worth fighting  [report anonymous abuse]
