Blog: My Wife's First Vegan meal
I have told you about my progress with my kids as far as adopting a vegan lifestyle. Now, my wife is jumping on the bandwagon (kind of). Saturday she made some spicy vegan chili. It had brown rice, black beans, tomatoes, corn, onions, garlic, chili powder, an red pepper. I topped it off with some salsa, non-dairy sour cream and shredded soy cheese. It was awesome!! She is now eating vegetarian about half of the time!

So we are well on our way to being a vegan family. I think thats great!

  Blog: Something Funny
I went to an Earth Day Celebration on Sunday at one of our local parks. The first thing I was impressed with was that there was so many people there. They have this huge field that they use for parking and it was full. I was glad to see so many earth conscience people in one place. We looked around at many of the demonstrations and I had a wonderful feeling knowing that there are other people out there who care. This one particular park has free train rides on little mini trains through the woods. They had all kinds of trains, electric, gasoline, and steamers. The steamers burn coal. Yes, thats right coal. One of the most polluting things that you can burn! When these steamers came into the station to drop off and pick up passangers they would billow out this huge plume of black and brown noxious smoke. A woman in front of me said, "Hey, I thought this was Earth Day?" To which I added, "I was thinking the exact same thing. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of having Earth Day?" It was a little upsetting. In one part of the park they have a demonstration on green energy (solar and wind power) and at the other end of the park they are polluting the environment!! That is so riduculous its funny!! In fact, I was so unnerved I almost left. But the kids were really wanting to ride on the train. We were there the previous day and I promised them I would take them. So, we stood in this long line for about an hour in direct sun with no shade. I didn't even think of taking sunscreen. Now we are all paying for it! Anyway, I was hoping we would get an electric one to ride on. But we get all the way down there and get the worst of the two steamers they had! I have great luck. But I waited over an hour for this thing so we got on. As we were getting on I noticed that the engineer's face was covered with black soot from having his face in that smoke all day. I'm thinking, "This can't be good." It actually wasn't too bad. The wind only blew the smoke in our face a couple of times.

One of the railroad workers was sitting at the back right behind me and I was talking to her most of the ride and I made sure to mention the contradiction of celebrating Earth Day while gurgling plumes of black smoke into the air. She nodded her head but didn't make any comment. She probably had never thought of it that way before. Maybe I made an impression on her. Id' like to see them get rid of the steamers and gas-powered engines. To me that would be cheaper and makes more sense. We should be able to enjoy the beauty of nature without polluting it at the same time.

  Blog: Good news!!
Yesterday I was watching a video about animal cruelty on Google. Two of my kids sat down and were watching it with me. After seeing what goes on in our slaughterhouses they both said they are not going to eat meat anymore! My wife was upset that I let them watch the video and said I should be ashamed. I said the ones eating the meat that comes from those poor animals should be ashamed. My kids are very tender-hearted and have inherited a great respect for nature. My wife was raised on a Texas farm and defends her beloved meat industry. But while she was eating lunch today she said she felt sick to her stomach about the things I told her that were in the video. I told her that was good.

Blog: NYSE Defies Animal Extremists... and Promotes Animal Cruelty
(PLEASE CLICK ON THE PETITION LINK AT THE END TO HELP)

It looks like animal testing will continue for the time being, according to a UPI story by Shaun Waterman, which I've excerpted here:

"NYSE defies animal extremists

By SHAUN WATERMAN
UPI Homeland and National Security Editor

WASHINGTON, Dec. 29, 2006 (UPI) -- The decision by the New York Stock Exchange to list a medical research company targeted by animal rights protestors on a new electronic market where shares can be traded anonymously is being hailed as a victory by animal researchers.

Life Sciences Research, Inc., a Princeton, N.J.-based medical research firm that specializes in animal experiments announced just before Christmas that it had settled a dispute with the NYSE, and would be listed on the exchange's new all-electronic trading platform called Arca.

"We're thrilled," the company's Chief Financial Officer Richard Michaelson told United Press International. "It is a totally anonymous trading environment," he said of the new electronic exchange. "In our situation that is a big advantage."

Life Sciences Research, Inc., is the parent of U.K.-based Huntingdon Life Sciences, and has been targeted on both sides of the Atlantic by animal rights activists organized under the name Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty, or SHAC..."

However, 'business' for Life Sciences Research, Inc. could turn very, sour very fast... and millions of frightened, defenseless, innocent animals currently slated for repeated, often excruciatingly painfull procedures, violent treatment, and hopeless lonely deaths could suddenly be free... if The Dr Hadwen Trust for Humane Research, and other animal and consumer protection groups have anything to say about it!!!

AND ALL OF YOU CAN HELP... NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE!

"The European legislation governing EU animal experiments (Directive 86/609/EEC), is now some 20 years old, desperately out of date and in urgent need of review. The European Commission has recognised this and a review is now underway. The Commission has also launched an 'Action Plan' that explicitly states "The final aim is to replace animal experiments with methods not entailing the use of an animal."

The revision of Directive 86/609/EEC provides an unprecedented opportunity for the European Union to increase efforts to replace all animal experiments through carefully targeted and co-ordinated research to develop, valid
ate and implement non-animal methods. This could save millions of laboratory animals and improve the quality of research and testing."

- Please see more info and SIGN THEIR PETITION by clicking this link -

It will happen in the EU. It will happen everywhere!

Blog: Canada's Massive Seal Slaughter

Believe it... know it... oppose it.

We are only 5 months away from another harp seal massacre...unless we can stop it first. We all need to act together to put an end to these annual atrocities in Canada. Everyone can help. No matter how much time you have available, no matter what your skills, there is something you can do to save the seals.

"The killing continues for political positioning, fur coats for the rich and aphrodisiacs for frustrated Asian men. It continues for the "lifestyle and cultural heritage rights" (BS!) of a small minority of white, evil, ignorant men.

It continues because of the greed of a select few FISHING companies and processing plant owners and it also continues because of an arrogant government bureaucracy that simply doesn't care what the majority of its people say year after year: Stop the seal hunt.

Lastly, it continues because the rest of the seafood industry remains silent, complicit in the massacre that companies like the Barry Group lobby for year after year, demanding ever-increasing quotas."

Blog: Vote YES on Prop 204!

VOTE YES ON PROPOSITION 204

LEARN HOW TO HELP BAN ABUSIVE FACTORY FARMING PRACTICES IN ARIZONA
The cruel and intensive confinement of veal calves and pregnant pigs on industrialized factory farms may soon be banned if enough support is given to a crucial ballot initiative effort now underway in Arizona! This ballot initiative aims to stop cruel, industrialized corporate factory farms in Arizona which place profit ahead of animal welfare. Gestation crates were banned in Florida as a result of a similar grassroots citizen initiative.

July 6, 2006 update: Arizonans for Humane Farms, a coalition of animal-welfare agencies including Farm Sanctuary, have reached a landmark goal! 123,000 valid signatures were required to qualify this humane initiative for the November 2006 ballot. Our goal was to collect at least 200,000 signatures in the ten-month gathering period, but dedicated volunteers surpassed expectations, and we have turned in over 218,000 signatures! These signatures were submitted to the Arizona Secretary of State on July 6, 2006. This groundbreaking ballot initiative is now on its way in Arizona, as Proposition 204, to outlaw the cruel and intensive confinement of pregnant pigs in "gestation crates" and male calves in veal crates on industrialized factory farms. Click Here to read the July press release by Arizonans for Humane Farms.

The pork industry and their agribusiness allies have raised vast amounts of money and are funding an extensive advertising campaign throughout Arizona. They do not want to allow calves raised for veal and pregnant pigs to be able to turn around and stretch their limbs! Instead of focusing on the actual issues addressed by Proposition 204, the factory farming industry is attempting to divert the message with dismissive smear tactics.

Arizona media have written about this initiative and we hope to give this effort much more attention:

Capitol Media Services - September 8, 2005
Petition drive would enlarge small pens of farm animals

This important measure will phase out the use of "gestation crates" for breeding pigs and prevent the use of veal crates for veal calves. Enough voter signatures have been secured to officially submit the initiative onto this year's ballot. However, the next step will be to raise awareness among Arizona voters about these cruel confinement systems used in modern factory farms which do not allow animals enough room to simply turn around, lie down and extend their limbs! Television ads and other communications efforts, encouraging voters to Vote Yes on Prop 204, will air as the vote nears. For more information and to get involved in this campaign, visit the website: Arizonans for Humane Farms, call: (480) 449-7644 or email: info@yesforhumanefarms.org.

These pictures show the tragedy and suffering that animals experience on factory farms everyday. Arizonans for Humane Farms is committed to passing a measure on the ballot that would simply allow animals such as these enough room to turn around and extend their limbs.

Message: BookShare: "The Fast Food CRAZE" by Tina Volpe
"The Fast Food CRAZE"
http://www.fastfoodcraze.com/index.aspx

The Book:

The Fast Food Craze educates readers about the underhanded advertising schemes of the fast food giants and how the worthless food they serve is destroying our health and making our children seriously ill.

It is an eye-opening description of factory farming and the barbaric treatment of animals raised for food. Tina Volpe offers insight into the intelligence and personalities of these creatures when living in a natural environment. Learn about animals escaping from slaughterhouses, a pig who saves lives and an honest (and enlightening) look into the food industry. The Fast Food Craze a must-read for anyone interested in staying healthy and compassion for all animals.

"This book has obviously been a labor of love. The Fast Food Craze is chock full of hard hitting facts, a solid plea for commonsence at the table or drive-in."
-- Ingrid Newkirk, Author and co-founder of PETA

The author:

Tina Volpe was raised in Lake View Terrace, California, a northern horsy suburb of Los Angeles. As a child, Volpe's home included many farm animals, most of which were eventually slaughtered for food for the family. This birth-life-death cycle had a huge affect on the author due to the love and friendship she felt with these creatures who, once living a comfortable life, were later served at the dinner table.

As a result of her love for, and interaction with, animals, Volpe became a vegetarian nearly three decades ago. Over the past five years, she has been studying the farm industry and the affects its business decisions and resulting procedures have on animals. Volpe also realized that the fast food giants are a large cause of this suffering due to the demands of mass production. This research convinced her that while advocacy groups have made advances in informing the public about farm industry cruelty, that more efforts are needed because animals are still suffering at the hand of businesses.

Tina Volpe is a health researcher, 32 year vegetarian, author, speaker, educator, television host, radio host, consultant and published columnist. Also, she is a member of, and has made contributions to the many organizations that promote animal rights. She lives in Northern Arizona.

Why be a veggie?

GLOBAL WARMING.... READ THIS!
-from GoVeg.com
According to University of Chicago researchers, adopting a vegan diet makes a bigger impact in reducing global warming than does switching to a Toyota Prius hybrid car.

Global warming has been called humankind's “greatest challenge” and the world's most grave environmental threat. Human activities are causing large amounts of “greenhouse gases” (gases that prevent heat from escaping from the Earth's atmosphere) in the atmosphere. This then causes the air around the Earth to become hotter, which scientists say will increasingly lead to catastrophic natural disasters, such as more frequent and intense hurricanes, flooding, and drought. Many people are trying to help reduce global warming by driving more fuel-efficient cars and using less electricity, but by far, the most effective thing that you can do to fight global warming is to go vegetarian (http://goveg.com/order.asp)

The billions of chickens, turkeys, pigs, and cows who are crammed into factory farms each year in the U.S. produce enormous amounts of methane, both in their digestive processes and from the feces that they excrete. Scientists report that every molecule of methane is more than 20 times as effective as carbon dioxide is at trapping heat in our atmosphere. Statistics from the Environmental Protection Agency show that animal agriculture is the single largest cause of methane emissions in the U.S. Raising animals for food is causing global warming.
