UNM Student Government Passes Lobo Resolution!

Through the great work and dedication of the UNM Wilderness Alliance, the Student Body Government of the University of New Mexico passed a resolution supporting the protection of the Mexican Gray Wolf!

Joint Resolution 2S

WHEREAS, The Associated Students of the University of New Mexico represent undergraduate student body; and

WHEREAS, the Mexican gray wolf, also known as the Lobo, has been the University of New Mexico's mascot since 1920; and

WHEREAS, the Mexican gray wolf, a keystone species found only in the unique habitats of the southwestern United States and Mexico, remains a perfect representation of the University of New Mexico's twin objectives: to encompass the heritage of New Mexico and to provide leadership for the future; and

WHEREAS, Lobos have recently been returned to the wilderness of New Mexico after about sixty years of total extinction within the United States;

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that, the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico celebrate the 10th anniversary of the first releases of wolves in the Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona; and

THEREFORE BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that, the Associated Students of the University of New Mexico resolutely support the continued existence and prosperity of the Mexican gray wolf in the wilderness of the southwestern United States as a means of ensuring that the inspirational qualities of wild wolves may continue to inspire current and future generations of UNM students, faculty, staff, and alumni;

THEREFORE BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that, copies of this resolution be sent to the University of New Mexico's Board of Regents, President David Schmidly, and Curator Joseph Cook at the Museum of Southwestern Biology.

The DNR Is Changing Their Stance...

Although Adrian Wydeven will still not communicate with W.O.L.F. representatives, he has answered some emails sent by concerned individuals. In one of those, referring to DNR plans for the wolf, he said,

"Remove the animal from the landscape and either euthanize it or send to captive wolf research facility if available and if permits and other authorities allow."

In a recent TV interview
(watch interview-click), Signe Holtz (DNR-Bureau Director, Endangered Resources) stated,
"...we are considering alternatives right now..."

At this writing W.O.L.F. does have a phone call into Signe Holtz, but are not optimistic that she will return it.

Additionally, in the process of trying to expedite a permit from the US Fish & Wildlife Service, in order to move the wolf from WI, we were told that the DNR was pursuing arrangements to move the wolf to a research facility in Minnesota. The name of that facility is the "Wildlife Science Center" and their web site is: http://www.wildlifesciencecenter.org/
We have a call into the Executive Director of this facility, Peggy Callahan. We are excited that this is being considered as an option, but are somewhat concerned about the fact that this is a "research facility". We want to know what type of plans they have for this animal, if it is sent there. Please email Peggy at :

The Message Is Getting Into the Media...

Your emails, faxes and phone calls have received attention from the media as well. The story is being reported on numerous TV reports and in Newspapers. It has even been picked up by the AP wire and been printed in Metropolitan Areas outside of Wisconsin (ie. Chicago Tribune, Minneapolis-St. Paul Star Tribune, Denver Post).

There are polls set-up and a discussion page established to help spread the message even more.

Please view the listings below for links to some of those reports and web sites.

PLEASE! Keep The Pressure On.

Please don’t believe we have won this battle, yet!

If we slack off at this point, there is no assurance that the wolf’s life will be spared. We must keep up the pressure and let the authorities know that we are still watching.

It is also important that this animal not be used for research or exploited in any way.

Please Send One More Email To All Of The Addresses Listed Below -- THANK YOU!
