Alert: VOTE IN A STAMP AND HELP US TO SPAY AND HELP STRAY AND FERAL CATS IN PORTUGAL
Focus:Animal Welfare
Action Request:Write E-Mail
Location:Portugal
Please take some minutes to read this appeal. It is very important
and it won’t cost you anything. Your vote may help us to spay stray
and feral cats and avoid their babies’ death through drowning in hot
water. And all you will have to do is to vote in this stamp by writing your e-mail
But let me introduce myself first

My name is Lígia Baptista Rodrigues and I am from Portugal. My
sister and I have created a project to help feral cats. It is what
you call Trap-Neuter-Return. A Trap was offered to us by an
association that does the same. And this year we have spayed 6 cats.
We have created this project because where we live people drown and
burry the kittens alive. They refuse to contribute financially for
cats spaying. Therefore we created thye www.as-patinhas-da-
padina.blogspot.com. You can visit our blog and if you seek for a
translator in Yahoo.com you will have an idea of what we do.

Right now The Portuguese national Postal Service is holding a
contest for a postal stamp that according to the regulation of the
contest “is susceptible of being emitted in 2008”. It says that
the “CTT (Portuguese National Postal Service) may change totally or
partially the works created”. Therefore the only certainty is that a
prize of 1 500 will be delivered to the winner and that money would
be a real blessing for the animals we are helping. Money is like a
magic wand for animals.Everyone agrees that money is very important
for the animals, to spay them, to save their lives when they are in
danger.

I have sent a proposal of a stamp that I drew myself and I applied
under the category "Animals and Nature".

Help me to win this contest for the animals. Slowly we will paint
their world with other colours, changing one here and there by
touching things, by touching them, by interfering, by acting. I
believe that I have changed a little the area where I live. I did
not change minds or hearts. They are as they always have been. I
have conquered many enemies but I changed their lives and futures
and that is all that matter. And I believe that they are grateful
and happy. They are not angry at us even though we have trapped
them. They still trust in us. They see love. They remember the good
that was done to them.

Therefore till May 31 do not forget us. If you are interested in
helping us please vote in my stamp. Vote and spread the stamp so
that we may convert the money into a safe and kind future for these
beings that we love so much that are so worthy of everything we do
for them.

To vote, you just have to do as follows:

1. Go to this link
http://aquihaselo.com/Vote.aspx?idUser=2060

2.
TYPE YOUR E_MAIL ADDRESS in the text field and click the
button "Enviar" (it means send). Those who have hotmail cannot vote.
To vote you have to create a new email)
A validation email will be sent to your mailbox

3. Go to your mailbox and open the email Validação de voto from
info@auihaselo.com and click "Para validar a sua votação clique
aqui" It means: to validate your vote you must click in here.

In case of doubts contact me please

Thank you Lìgia

REMEMBER YOUR VOTE IS VERY IMPORTANT TO ME AND TO MY STRAY AND FERAL CATS. WE NEED YOUR VOTE TO BE ABLE TO WIN THE PRIZE AND THE PRIZE TO KEEP SPAYING AND HELPING FERAL AND STRAY CATS

Alert: Man slits throat of dachshund-spaniel mix--leaves to die alone
Focus:Animal Welfare
Action Request:Write Letter
Location:United States
Please start a discussion of this share in any animal welfare groups--we want to get as many people to write and/or email as we can!  Thank you all! :)

A Grantsburg man has been charged with slitting the throat of his ex-wife's dog, then leaving the dachshund-spaniel mix to die in her Frederic home.

Brian J. Vanthof, 27, was allegedly angry with his ex-wife for filing a restraining order against him in early May, Polk County District Attorney Karen Olson said Tuesday. To get back at her, Vanthof is accused of breaking into her home early June 4 and using a butcher knife to attack the dog, named Scrappy.

The ex-wife, whose name wasn't released, was not home at the time of the incident.

Olson said she's never seen such a crime.

"We have a lot of domestic violence, but we haven't had anything this ugly and openly cruel, both to the animal and his ex-wife," she said.

According to a Polk County Sheriff's Office report:

A couple of neighbors witnessed Vanthof entering his ex-wife's home just after midnight. When the woman arrived home a few hours later, she found "a lot of blood" on her kitchen floor. She also noticed that Scrappy did not greet her at the door. In a panic, she ran to a neighbor's home and called Frederic police.

The first officer on the scene followed a blood trail that "looked like someone was bleeding to death running around for help." He found the dog in the living room, lying between a coffee table and a couch. The dog was gasping for air and "looking at me and following me with his eyes," the officer noted. The dog's throat had been slit.

The officer found a large butcher knife in the kitchen sink with what appeared to be Scrappy's hair and flesh on it.

During the investigation, Vanthof allegedly text-messaged his ex-wife and called her on the phone. His text message read, "I hope U have a good night."

Frederic police asked Grantsburg police to arrest Vanthof on suspicion of violating his ex-wife's restraining order.

Scrappy was taken to a Grantsburg veterinary hospital for treatment but did not survive the 25-minute ride.

Vanthof was ordered to appear at a preliminary hearing July 3 in Polk County Circuit Court for the felony burglary and animal abuse charges, as well as a misdemeanor charge of violating the restraining order. He was released Tuesday from the Polk County Jail on a $5,000 cash bond.

District Attorney Olson criticized the release of Vanthof on such a small bond.

"I don't intend to look on this lightly. A person who's capable of doing this just out of cruelty, there's every reason to believe that the next step is harm to people," she said.

The director of a Twin Cities domestic abuse shelter said that while shocking, this type of incident is not uncommon.

"The intent of the abusive party is to be able to control their partner. Pets represent something very important to the owner," said Susan Neis of Cornerstone, a shelter for abused women and men in Bloomington. "That level of being so inhumane, that maniacal, it's mind bending.

"This woman is forever going to feel responsible for the death of her pet."

Alert: Are you willing to ACT for animals??

Are you an animal lover?  Do you hate to see animal cruelty?  Do you want to help animals?  Are you willing to "talk the talk and walk the walk?"  I have two animal welfare groups that I truly believe can change things for animals.  If everyone puts in the energy required--we can help hundreds of thousands of animals.  Please join--but only if you will actually participate.  You don't have to post daily or even weekly, just be consistent.

$2 for animals in need of vet care
http://passport.care2.net/invite.html?g=7551

The above group is very important because we will donate $2 per person, per case (with 1 case a week).  You will donate a total of $8.  If you care about animals, you can certainly spend $2 to help those animals who belong to nobody but were victims of cruelty and need vet care.  Or much loved animals who just happen to live with a poor family.  Also, we will support one sanctuary a month.  If you care about animals-- prove it.  I truly hope to see some dedicated animal welfare activists join my group and help me make it a success!!

Focus:Environment
Action Request:Various
Location:United States
*look* http://www.conservationinternational.org/xp/CIWEB/getinvolved/everyday.xml

Now, more than ever, your everyday actions count.

CI partners with committed businesses to provide you with more options to support our mission and protect biodiversity. These opportunities allow you to participate in biodiversity conservation in two distinct ways:

  1. When you purchase some of the products listed below, CI will receive a direct contribution to support our activities in the field, or
  2. You can support CI indirectly through the efforts of local communities that operate environmentally friendly businesses in the biodiversity hotspots.

Also, consider incorporating conservation into your daily life by visiting our Investigate Biodiversity Web site.

Bank of America
Through our partnership with Bank of America and its "Vanishing Species" checks, bill paying can benefit CI's conservation efforts. For every box ordered, CI receives 50 cents to fund projects in the biodiversity hotspots. Make a personal statement about your commitment to biodiversity conservation with checks that feature stunning photos of endangered species, include CI’s logo, and are printed on recycled paper.

eBay Giving Works
Nearly 100 million people like you use eBay everyday to buy and sell everything from antiques to household items. Now you can use eBay to support CI. eBay allows registered users to sell items through their Giving Works program. You can donate part or all of your auction proceeds to CI.

Marich Confectionery
Candy is not only a sweet treat to eat – it is also a sweet treat for the environment. With their “Caring Through Candy” program, each time you purchase tasty treats from the Marich Confectionery Web site you can donate five percent of the sale to CI. At the end of your order, select “Conservation International” from the list of beneficiaries and you will help us protect biodiversity.

Office Depot
Pens, paper, binders, printer cartridges – the essential items in any office. Where you get those items, however, can make a difference. Office Depot makes it possible for you to purchase office supplies and support CI at the same time. By following this link, CI will receive between 2 and 7 percent of the dollar amount purchased each month. Office Depot also offers a variety of recycled products – search on “recycled” to get a complete list.

Starbucks Coffee Company
There is no easier way to support CI than by buying a cup of coffee. In collaboration with CI’s Conservation Coffee™ program, CI and Starbucks developed Starbucks® Organic Shade-Grown Mexico, Conservation Colombia™ and Starbucks® Peru. These coffees are available in select international and Starbucks-licensed stores. When you purchase these products you support CI and its efforts to make Conservation Coffee™ a viable and competitive product in future markets such as Costa Rica, Indonesia and Panama.

United Airlines
Through their Commitment to Community, United Airlines offers two ways to Support CI – the Charity Miles and Change the World with your Change programs. When you donate your unused travel miles to CI, money that would normally pay for airfare goes to support programs in the field. Additionally, United Airlines’ Change the World with your Change program allows international travelers to donate spare foreign currency to CI.

Xēko Mission: Madagascar
The mysterious and fantastic creatures that inhabit the island nation of Madagascar can be explored as never before through Xēko Mission: Madagascar (pronounced “zee-ko”), a new trading card game that challenges players to build the strongest “Xēko -system.” Befitting the game’s eco-theme, Seattle-based Matter Group will donate four percent of the net sales to support CI’s real world efforts to protect Madagascar and the Earth’s other 34-biodiversity hotspots.

Blog: Do you have $5 to spare for animals?
I have an idea.  There are so many times when I read about animals being put down because there is not enough space for them or not enough money to care for high vet bills.  Here's what I am proposing:  We have a group that donates $5-$10 a month (per person) to provide care to abused animals.  This is just an idea and it is certainly not set in stone.  If you have any suggestions on how to make this work to help more animals, please let me know.  I don't generally like to donate money because I think my time is more valuable but in this case, money is the most valuable thing I, or anyone else could give to an abused animal.  The recent case of King bothers me immensely and I want to change it.  The first vet they took him to didn't want to treat him because they couldn't pay!  Visit this share to get some info if you don't already know about this case.    http://www.care2.com/c2c/share/detail/117742

So, what do you think?  Would you be willing to donate $5-$10 a month to help save an animal's life??  I could and I will.  Together, we can save so many!

Whalewatch has been campaigning and lobbying national and international governments to put an end to this unnecessary and inhumane practice of whaling. Whale welfare is an issue of global concern.

The Whalewatch coalition is calling upon the International Whaling Commission to fully address the welfare problems associated with modern day whaling activities and recognise that the whaling debate is not just about animals and conservation, but also about animal suffering.

If you are against the cruelty of whaling please let your IWC representative know that now!

In case you weren't aware of this breed discrimination by petsmart, I
thought I'd notify you. They refuse to let 'bully breeds' attend their
doggie day camps. I didn't know this until just yesterday. Here's a link to their doggie day care site.

I've started a petition here:

This isn't about their camp. This is about them causing ignorant people
that believe myths and stereotypes about these dogs to be reinforced
and even more widely believed. LET'S DO SOMETHING PEOPLE! THIS ISN'T
FAIR!!
