Blog: UK - Stonehenge - Campaign groups call for rethink of A303 strategy remove Remove this share

30th March 2006

In a joint press release ten campaign groups
have announced concern at the UK Governments approach to the traffic
issues regarding the roads nearest to the Stonehenge World Heritage
Site and have agreed a joint alternative proposal, which is in line
with the "Achievable Stonehenge" strategy announced earlier in the
month by Heritage Action and TimeWatch.

It is clear that a
strong consensus on the issues underlying the A303 consultation is
emerging, on a vision for the Stonehenge World Heritage site that means
dealing with the more pressing A344 issues first, rather than allowing
this to be driven by the A303 consultation.

The campaign groups announced their vision the Stonehenge World Heritage site:
`To
regain the tranquillity and dignity of this unique cultural landscape,
allowing present and future generations fully to enjoy and appreciate
the World Heritage site as a whole.'

Having visited this site as part of my heritage both in pre-regulated times and within the last 3 years I am appalled to view & feel the bracketing & encirclement of Stonehenge's power by urbanization & subsequent traffic issues. It was with chagrin when last visiting that I found well-meaning heritage protection of this powerful monument in force , being unable to walk through this edifice at will & subjected to regulated visitation & recordings I do understand the necessity to protect from vandalism/souvenir hunters and do applaud the efforts undertaken to protect from such, but much more is needed in the way of cessation of vehicular traffic, closure of bracketing roads , construction of a bypass well out of the immediate area in order to restore the site to it's full known boundaries...now that would be something to see !!

Hi George, i love your sites, and yes i have signed most of them i think.I think its an outrage like many others, that this can happen to our heritage, famous landmarks, buildings ect... should not be allowed to be moved, dug up, built over.So i wish you lots of luck Babe.Hugs Tara.xxx
