I'm writing you from the Southern Ocean, onboard the Esperanza. We left New Zealand late last week, and we're heading directly for the Japanese whaling fleet.
Our mission is dangerous - to get in between the harpoons of the whalers and the whales they plan to kill. But we won't be alone. This year, we're sailing with the biggest crew ever - nearly 12,000 of you have already climbed onboard to help us save whales. And we'll be putting your ideas into action.
You don't have to be here in the Southern Ocean with us to make a difference for the whales. Sign up to become a Whale Defender today, and take action to protect the whales.
The battle to save the whales won't end here in the Southern Ocean, and it can't be won without your help. This year, the true fate of whales will be decided in the lead up to the annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission in Anchorage, Alaska this May.
As a Whale Defender, we'll tell you about actions you can take over the next 3 months to help save the whales. You'll get a personal, guided tour of the web tools you can use to protect whales. You'll be able to suggest new ideas and join up with other Whale Defenders working to save the whales across the country, and around the world. From making signs to taking pictures, writing letters, to calling Congress, there are lots of easy things that you and your fellow crew mates can do to make a difference.
We're ready to face the Japanese fleet here in the Southern Ocean, and we need you to be ready to protect whales from the shore. We're all in this together, and we share an important goal: to end commercial whaling once and for all.
For the whales,
Melanie Duchin Whale Campaigner onboard the Esperanza
p.s. It's important for me and the crew onboard the Esperanza to know that you're supporting us and doing your part to protect the whales too. You can follow what we're doing onboard by reading my blogs, and I'll be sure to keep you informed about what's happening here.

My thoughts and admiration is with you. Stay safe and all my love, Bea
Ps Are you at the same place as the Seashepherd?
Is Greenpeace putting their differences aside for the good of the whales? That would be fantastic.

What is your take on all this?
