We need some form of global government to deal with the following issues:
fishing, boat traffic and piracy in international waters
extraction of fresh water from rivers that cross national boundaries
cross-border pollution, especially air pollution
peacekeeping
control of multinational companies, especially in poor nations that do not have an adequate government to prevent exploitation of citizens
etc (please add to this list)
Such a government will probably arise out of the UN. I imagine a senate style government with representatives from each country, where the voting power held by each member is proportional to the number of people they represent - provided there is a functioning democratic structure that put them in place.
Eventually we could move on to a system with a number of members from each of the larger countries (roughly proportional to population) and a minimum of one member from smaller countries. This would require that the members from larger countries be directly elected rather than appointed by their respective national government.
Currently there is nothing to stop large businesses going into third world countries, extracting resources and not paying a fair amount to the citizens of that country, who ultimately own the resource. All they have to do is pay (bribe) the local government or militia enough.

I agree global is the way to go.
However, Americans, for the most part consider the UN to be disfunctional and not representative of the world governments in a manner that is proportional to the individual Nation's financial status, military strength, and population numbers.
I like the idea of electing national representatives. How to keep those elections from being corrupted by monetary contributions from large multinational corporations is going to be the biggest difficulty.
Campaign finance reform has not been effective here in the US. Current laws are not enforced. Lobbyist find loopholes and politicians gorge at the trough of corporate donations.
How can corruption be minimized?
Consider all the fraud and scandals that are ongoing in the UN.

I agree with Eileen, the UN does not have a very good track record when it comes to fair representation nor enforcement of environmental problems. A global solution maybe very difficult to find without all nations putting aside differences, greed, and working together.

I agree that we need a World Government. A key question is what should the responsibilities of the World Government be?
My answer is that a World Government should be responsible for the global commons - water, air, minerals, wild flora and fauna, etc.
I also believe that every person on Earth of a responsible age should be entitled to one vote in the Global Government.
There are plenty of other questions to be identified, answered and debated.
The time has come to transition to Global Government - and governance - to address the many issues and needs of the global commons in an equitable and sustainable way.
