If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by
1. ENVIRONMENT:
switch everything to clean energy sources (by creating solar, wind, and biofuels farms and mandating that corporations and
municipalities adhere to the according guidelines);
mandating that manufacturers make all packaging and disposable items from non-toxic and biodegradable and/or recyclable
materials and taxing them the amount necessary to recycle/negate the waste they produce;
outlawing the exchange and sale of pollution credits with the eventual phase-out of all pollution allowances;
heavily taxing non-organic, non-pasture raised/freerange, non-humane rearing/transport/slaughter farms, with the eventual goal of
outlawing them in most circumstances;
Make all water and sewage plants environmentally sound and sustainable and increase process and purification standards
2. HUMAN RIGHTS:
abolish the death penalty and assure wage and suffering compensation for the wrongfully imprisoned;
reform voting laws (do away with the electoral college, make a national primary day, automatically send out convenience
"absentee" ballots to all voters, ensure the registration of voters and the protection of that registration, and use government
made, electronically verified, paper-receipt issuing, transparently operating machines and systems);
mandate that corporations have no "human" rights and as such cannot contribute to the campaigns of political candidates or
parties, that all such fundraising must be done through individuals on a grassroots level, that an unbiased, thorough, and clear
information message must be released to the public and aired on network medias, but that there may be no other tv or radio
advertising during an election, and no politician may accept any money from any company, nor favors or gifts, and may not be
lobbied to by any corporation, under penalty of swift prosecution, removal from office, seizure of ill-gotten assets, and
imprisonment for the politician, rejection of business license and seizure of assets for the corporation, and seizure of assets
and imprisonment for the lobbyist and board members;
insure the right to marry anyone;
make and enforce strict privacy laws;
guarantee the right of free access to one's own medical, judicial, and credit records, and to control others' access to said
records (with certain limitations);
make and enforce strict consumer protection laws (including thorough ingredient and process labeling on ALL products, and
warnings for all ingredients and processes that are possibly harmful, truth-in-advertising and product/service warranty laws, and
the utter abolition of monopolies, particularly in the areas of energy, communication and media, reduce and restrict advertising,
and reduce and restrict copyrights and patents to allow for not-for-profit uses);
restore and fully enforce all the rights of the accused including habeas corpus;
ensure the right to consume what one will, including recreational chemicals;
create a free, open, and readily-accessible center of information by which the public can learn of almost all records,
procedures, policies, structure, and goings-on of all government offices (so to make the government transparent and the burden of
responsibility clear) and also of general educational information including history, philosophy and literature, science and
technology, medicine, mechanical engineering, architectural engineering, electrical engineering, waterworks engineering,
agriculture, chemistry and biochemistry, languages, cultures and sociology, and communication, transportation, and energy
infrastructure, and make this center the guide and interface for the public to interact with the government (voting, petitions,
representative communication, legal proceedings and registrations, and social resource guide, etc);
ensure the access/provision to all citizens (and eventually all people of the world) all that which is needed for what is
considered by the modern world to be the most basic quality of life: good-quality shelter, complete health care, local and
nationwide (and one day world-wide) transportation (local and national low-cost green mag-lev trains), quality legal counsel,
doctoral-level education, communication (free public phones and internet kiosks), acess to above information, and assurance of a
living wage (~30,000 for one person and an additional ~10,000 per dependent) with the benefits of a 30 hour work week, unlimited
sick leave, eight weeks paid vacation and an additional 4 weeks unpaid, 1.5 years paid maternity leave and 6 months paid paternity
leave, quality child care, and matched retirement accounts)
3. PEACE AND INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS:
start a program that will ensure the sustainable supply of clean water, release of medical patents (as above), and removal of
landmines in developing countries;
start a second program that builds education/training, jobs, food and resource farms, and transportation, communication, and
clean energy infrastructure to all nations that agree to adhere to all human and civil rights and democratic principles;
enter into a wmd reduction pact and make the first move by reducing our wmds by 90%;
extend the invitation to one-on-one discussion to all world leaders regardless of any existing hostilities and keep that
invitation permanently open;
encourage fair trade with developing nations, and embargo most trade with human-rights (including democracy standards and labor
laws) violators (except charitable co-operative trade with citizens, not larger companies whose income benefits the government);
remove our military presence (except for embassy-related peaceful bases mutually agrees upon) from countries where our presence
stems from an interest in controlling their government / installing favorable dictators or in an economic benefit, and where our
presence is unwanted by the general public, meanwhile aggressively engaging in peacekeeping / aid missions in areas where human
rights are being violated, exhausting all diplomatic avenues before using war ONLY as the LAST POSSIBLE resort in only the most severe cases
4. ECONOMY
severely tax corporations engaged in outsourcing or building overseas and then importing--this action along with the aforementioned government and environmental programs will create a plentiful supply and even excess of jobs, causing average pay and benefits to increase;
greatly reduce defense spending and increase efficiency of said spending by eliminating waste, focusing on information/passive
defense, increasing oversight at all levels, and phasing out all contracting while gradually making the military self-sufficient
to even the most basic level (food and resource growth and mining) and help it to fund itself with modest profits from excess
production--because of the current, grossly-bloated state of defense spending, saving this money alone will fund more than half of
the aforementioned social programs;
relieve all taxes of neccessities including sale tax of food, medication, personal care products, clothing, cleaning and
household supplies, under a certain price, property tax of one's own home (to a certain size) and subsistence farm (determined on
quantity of crop, not choice of crop, to be equal in value to living wage), and income tax beneath living wage--heavy taxation on
all unearned income and super-high brackets, with a first time success allowance the first year someone enters a significantly higher bracket
5. SOCIETY
all prisons exist for psychological, emotional, social rehabilitation, secondary education, half-pay work for the government only;
presidential mass-media conference on social norms to address how media influences popular thought and how to act more responsibly;
first-time family domestic aid to ensure proper treatment and education of child, encourage good domestic skills, and give some relief to first-time parents;
national essential curriculum includes basic math, grammar, literature and philosophy, geography, culture and sociology,
government, economics, SCIENCES and teaches life-skills, trade skill knowledge, and most importantly encourages free-thought--this
curriculum is to be added to by local boards of education;
pass law making it illegal for vetinarian to not treat seriously ill or in pain animal (mammal, reptile, and bird), make animal
cruelty a felony with stiff punishments, and start systematic massive, nationwide no-kill shelters and sterilization programs with
organized help of charities
