June 2009

This month, I'm celebrating my 11-YEAR VEGAN ANNIVERSARY!  Will you please help me to celebrate 11 years of a compassionate lifestyle by donating any multiple of $11 to In Defense of Animals in my name?

This year, I’ve chosen to support IDA for its contributions to the alterations of speciesist law and legal language.  Current laws, far from protecting the rights of non-human animals, continually fail to offer even basic non-human welfare protection.  One of IDA’s current US projects is “The Guardian Campaign”, seeking to change language referring to the human relationship to companion animals from “owner” to “guardian”, altering remedies for abuse, neglect and abandonment.

To learn more about and donate to IDA, please visit http://www.idausa.org/

Thank you!

Dear friends,

I'm so sorry that I've been neglecting my site again.  It's so wonderful to stop by, after having been wrapped up in life's challenges, and find so many messages and posts.  Thank you!

Californians, please vote YES on PROP 2!

Please find the official argument for PROP 2 in my blog.  Here are my thoughts on the matter:

Before reading the newly-released argument for PROP 2, please put the idea of factory farming, which accounts for more than 90% of the human "production" of animals for food, in perspective:

Imagine living your entire life confined to the seat of an airplane, along with the hundreds of others of your species in the same airplane. Make no mistake: You would not be permitted to leave your seat to use the toilet; you would have to urinate and deficate in your seat and on yourself, as would those in the seats next to you, and stacked above you and below you; nor would you be allowed to leave your seat to eat or drink; you would be force-fed a mixture of dead humans. When your natural agressive tendancies arose, as can be expected under such severe stress, causing you to lash out at your neighbors, your hands would be cut off without anesthesia, and the resulting infections would not be treated. Your eyes, nose, throat and resperatory tract would burn and become infected from the acids caused by the urine and feces in your enclosed environment, and under minimal artificial light, you would lose your natural pigments.

You would, of course, never know touch, affection, companionship or family, as, if you were to have children, which would be the products of rape by machine, they would be taken from you. You would, however, know daily terror as you witnessed others around you being dragged from their seats (unable to walk from pain and bodies ceasing to function), electrocuted, beaten, kicked, prodded and dragged with metal hooks. As you were taken away in the same way, you would be dragged into a place filled with blood, feces and vomit (natural secretions voided by all mamals during moments of pure terror); and then, you would be stunned, your throat cut carelessly and ineptly, hung upside-down (via hooks through your ankles), at which point there would be more than a 50% chance that you would be skinned alive and sawed apart, an ordeal that could leave you conciously suffering for 10-15 minutes.

Ah, but this couldn't happen to you because you were lucky enough to be born human. This is equally as rational a thought as that of the luck of the Aryan in Nazi Germany. Speciesism is no less a crime than racism, and factory farms are no less than Aschwitz. Ultimately, therefore, if we are to end such a crime, factory farming must be abolished altogether; however, this modest step, which sadly amounts to one of the largest animal-rights actions in history because of the number of animals it would save, is necessary because of the depth of speciesist thought in which we live. Voting YES on PROP 2 won't hurt you; it will only stop the hurt for someone else of another species. Please vote YES on PROP 2.

Speciesism and Intelligence

In making arguments for animal rights, particularly as consumption is concerned, recently, I've run into the old, supposed-intellectual-superiority argument very frequently, and I've found myself wanting to pull out my Mensa membership card to carry the argument beyond speciesism:

On Speciesist Consumption and the Presumed Rights Afforded by Intelligence

While the majority of the human race, which inflicts dire misery on other species and, in doing so, insidiously rapes the life of the earth for the sake of feeding itself unnecessarily, behaves as it does out of ignorance, when confronted with the results of its actions and ineluctable knowledge, the vast majority of this race, employing speciesist philosophy and pretending awareness of the scope of its actions, will hostilely insist that it has (and presumably has always had) the right to behave as it does because it possesses the planet's superior intelligence. To this I say that, by this reasoning, it is my right to rape, torture, skin alive, murder and eat 98 percent of the human species.

Ah, Julia Sugarbaker. This old quote came to my mind while a male Republican explained to me, metaphorically and in jest, of course, that Democrats are as they are (hm) because they lack a strong, male authority (father) figure. I refrained from explaining to him that, as is true with most Republican philosophies, this one was based on a false assumption, that the world was a better place when dominated by men.

"You cannot ignore history. History has shown that in general it has been the men who have done the rapin’ and the robbin’ and the killin’ and the war mongering for the last 2000 years. It has been the men who have done the pillaging and the beheading and the subjugating of whole races into slavery. It has been the men who have done the law makin and the money makin’ and most of the mischief makin’. So, if the world isn’t quite what you had in mind, you have only yourselves to thank."
-Julia Sugarbaker, Designing Women

Beautiful friends,

I'm so sorry that I've been out of touch lately; my life has been a bit difficult since the fire.  Thank you for your messages and cards, and love to all of you!

Dear magical friends,

San Diego is not expected to have any rain until next year, and the next Santa Ana, bringing with it a new fire threat, is expected to arrive in the region next week!  Please help by directing your energies toward the water element and temperature reduction:  Place a bowl of iced water, rather than candles, on each of your alters, and as you work with this element, focus on a cool, wet San Diego.  Please join me in healing the parched land!

Thank you!

Wild Fact About Me I'm claircognizant, clairsentient, mediumistic and psychokinetic.
My Philosophy Ask the experimenters why they experiment on animals, and the answer is: "Because the animals are like us." Ask the experimenters why it is morally okay to experiment on animals, and the answer is: "Because the animals are not like us." Animal experimentation rests on a logical contradiction. ~Charles R. Magel

We have enslaved the rest of the animal creation, and have treated our distant cousins in fur and feathers so badly that beyond doubt, if they were able to formulate a religion, they would depict the Devil in human form. ~William Ralph Inge, Outspoken Essays, 1922

From beasts we scorn as soulless,
In forest, field and den,
The cry goes up to witness
The soullessness of men.
~M. Frida Hartley

No one in the world needs a mink coat but a mink. ~Murray Banks

Cruelty is one fashion statement we can all do without. ~Rue McClanahan

Ever occur to you why some of us can be this much concerned with animals suffering? Because government is not. Why not? Animals don't vote. ~Paul Harvey

Why should man expect his prayer for mercy to be heard by What is above him when he shows no mercy to what is under him? ~Pierre Troubetzkoy

Think occasionally of the suffering of which you spare yourself the sight. ~Albert Schweitzer

Hunting is not a sport. In a sport, both sides should know they're in the game. ~Paul Rodriguez

Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, he cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits. Yet he is lord of all the animals. ~George Orwell, Animal Farm

If we cut up beasts simply because they cannot prevent us and because we are backing our own side in the struggle for existence, it is only logical to cut up imbeciles, criminals, enemies, or capitalists for the same reasons. ~C.S. Lewis

Though boys throw stones at frogs in sport, the frogs do not die in sport, but in earnest. ~Bion, "Water and Land Animals," Plutarch

The squirrel that you kill in jest, dies in earnest. ~Henry David Thoreau

The fact that man knows right from wrong proves his intellectual superiority to the other creatures; but the fact that he can do wrong proves his moral inferiority to any creatures that cannot. ~Mark Twain, What Is Man, 1906

Wild animals never kill for sport. Man is the only one to whom the torture and death of his fellow-creatures is amusing in itself. ~James Anthony Froude, Oceana, 1886

The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men. ~Alice Walker

As often as Herman had witnessed the slaughter of animals and fish, he always had the same thought: in their behaviour toward creatures, all men were Nazis. The smugness with which man could do with other species as he pleased exemplified the most extreme racist theories, the principle that might is right. ~Isaac Bashevis Singer

Life is life - whether in a cat, or dog or man. There is no difference there between a cat or a man. The idea of difference is a human conception for man's own advantage. ~Sri Aurobindo

Those who wish to pet and baby wild animals "love" them. But those who respect their natures and wish to let them live normal lives, love them more. ~Edwin Way Teale, Circle of the Seasons, 1953

It is just like man's vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions. ~Mark Twain

Animals can communicate quite well. And they do. And generally speaking, they are ignored. ~Alice Walker

Cruelty must be whitewashed by a moral excuse, and pretense of reluctance. ~George Bernard Shaw

In an earlier stage of our development most human groups held to a tribal ethic. Members of the tribe were protected, but people of other tribes could be robbed or killed as one pleased. Gradually the circle of protection expanded, but as recently as 150 years ago we did not include blacks. So African human beings could be captured, shipped to America and sold. In Australia white settlers regarded Aborigines as a pest and hunted them down, much as kangaroos are hunted down today. Just as we have progressed beyond the blatantly racist ethic of the era of slavery and colonialism, so we must now progress beyond the speciesist ethic of the era of factory farming, of the use of animals as mere research tools, of whaling, seal hunting, kangaroo slaughter and the destruction of wilderness. We must take the final step in expanding the circle of ethics. ~Pete Singer

Get a feel for fur: Slam your fingers in a car door. ~Anonymous, on the use of steel traps to capture fur-bearing animals, cited in Audubon, November 1990

Heaven is by favor; if it were by merit your dog would go in and you would stay out. Of all the creatures ever made [man] is the most detestable. Of the entire brood, he is the only one... that possesses malice. He is the only creature that inflicts pain for sport, knowing it to be pain. ~Mark Twain

Vivisection is a social evil because if it advances human knowledge, it does so at the expense of human character. ~George Bernard Shaw

I am not interested to know whether vivisection produces results that are profitable to the human race or doesn't.... The pain which it inflicts upon unconsenting animals is the basis of my enmity toward it, and it is to me sufficient justification of the enmity without looking further. ~Mark Twain

The basis of all animal rights should be the Golden Rule: we should treat them as we would wish them to treat us, were any other species in our dominant position. ~Christine Stevens

When a man wants to murder a tiger he calls it sport; when the tiger wants to murder him he calls it ferocity. ~George Bernard Shaw

I abhor vivisection with my whole soul. All the scientific discoveries stained with innocent blood I count as of no consequence. ~Mahatma Gandhi

Teaching a child not to step on a caterpillar is as valuable to the child as it is to the caterpillar. ~Bradley Millar

A Robin Redbreast in a cage
Puts all Heaven in a Rage.
~William Blake, Auguries of Innocence

People must have renounced, it seems to me, all natural intelligence to dare to advance that animals are but animated machines.... It appears to me, besides, that [such people] can never have observed with attention the character of animals, not to have distinguished among them the different voices of need, of suffering, of joy, of pain, of love, of anger, and of all their affections. It would be very strange that they should express so well what they could not feel. ~Voltaire, Traité sur la tolerance

The assumption that animals are without rights and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of Western crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality. ~Schopenhauer

Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages. ~Thomas A. Edison

To a man whose mind is free there is something even more intolerable in the sufferings of animals than in the sufferings of man. For with the latter it is at least admitted that suffering is evil and that the man who causes it is a criminal. But thousands of animals are uselessly butchered every day without a shadow of remorse. If any man were to refer to it, he would be thought ridiculous. And that is the unpardonable crime. ~Romain Rolland, Nobel Prize 1915

Very little of the great cruelty shown by men can really be attributed to cruel instinct. Most of it comes from thoughtlessness or inherited habit. The roots of cruelty, therefore, are not so much strong as widespread. But the time must come when inhumanity protected by custom and thoughtlessness will succumb before humanity championed by thought. Let us work that this time may come. ~Albert Schweitzer

The indifference, callousness and contempt that so many people exhibit toward animals is evil first because it results in great suffering in animals, and second because it results in an incalculably great impoverishment of the human spirit. All education should be directed toward the refinement of the individual's sensibilities in relation not only to one's fellow humans everywhere, but to all things whatsoever. ~Ashley Montague

The life spark in my eyes is in no way different than the life spark in the eyes of any other sentient being. ~Michael Stepaniak

We must fight against the spirit of unconscious cruelty with which we treat the animals. Animals suffer as much as we do. True humanity does not allow us to impose such sufferings on them. It is our duty to make the whole world recognize it. Until we extend our circle of compassion to all living things, humanity will not find peace. ~Albert Schweitzer, The Philosophy of Civilization
What Gives Me Hope Awareness
If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by Altering destructive behaviors:
1) Outlaw commercial and animal farming, removing current animals to sanctuaries, to be paid for with industry funds
2) Impose educated veganism, requiring direct movement to grain farming
3) Ban commercial dietary and digestive aids, drugs and medical procedures, requiring public health education compensation from organizations currently selling/promoting such products and procedures
4) Outlaw vivisection, removing current animals to sanctuaries, to be paid for with public funds, and requiring current, available and more effective alternate methods in laboratories
5) Outlaw smoking, destroying current tobacco products and treating addicts (limited) with industry funds
6) Dissolve trash services, requiring citizens to transport their own recycling (limits imposed on plastics) to local plants and allowing five pounds of excess waste (not including compost) per person per month to be burned
7) Outlaw treatment, beyond organic sanitation, of public water
8) Dissolve current public water systems, requiring citizens to gather their own water (limits imposed) from local plants or wells
9) Impose gas and electrical use limits on businesses and citizens (including curfew)
10) Outlaw vehicles running on crude oils, requiring current conversions in one year and industry conversion in three years

Altering health views and behaviors:
1) Dissolve the US commercial drug industry, banning its use by the current medical industry and beginning movement toward prevention and naturalistic care only
2) Require vegan health, without alternative, in higher and medical education

Altering lifestyle through education:
1) Dissolve current school systems, requiring parent involvement in small neighborhood school houses
2) Require natural-life-skills education, including agriculture
3) Require global-life-awareness education, including attention to speciesism
4) Require music education, necessitating private instrument study for a minimum of five consecutive years prior to puberty
5) Require language education, necessitating the study of a minimum of two languages, each for a minimum of three consecutive years prior to puberty

Altering behaviors via law:
1) Change text of national law reguarding animal companion from "owner" to "guardian", indicating remedies
2) Impose equal penalties as remedies, including imprisonment and death penalties, for damage/death to all species
3) Outlaw production and sale of animals as companions and companion food, including remedies as in #2
4) Criminalize the use of animals for entertainment, including remedies as in #2
5) Outlaw zoos and related organizations employing captivity as a method of conservation and/or research, including remedies as in #2, government-funded, non-profit rescue sanctuaries excepted
