About Me *I am a patriotic progressive non-religious American liberal.
* I am open minded yet unwilling to suffer fools.
* Fiercely independent, pleasantly antisocial.

I am a secular humanist. I rely on reason to understand the world, and compassion guides my effort to apply my knowledge ethically. I behave decently to everyone without any expectation of rewards or punishment after I'm dead.

Wild Fact About Me 1) Formerly known as Professor Hubert J. Farnsworth.
2) Depak Chopra makes my skin crawl
3) Sunsets fill me with a profound sense of wonder and leave me giddy with revelation.
.
.
My Philosophy * We are not only responsible for this moment in time, but also for the wellbeing of the generations to come, on this planet and on worlds not yet dreamt. And it is for us to ensure that those future generations have the best opportunity to succeed.

* I believe in freedom; Freedom of thought, Freedom of speech, Freedom of expression and the Freedom to love who you will, regardless of traditional societal constraints.

* I believe that it is better to live with questions that may never be answered than answers that may never be questioned.

*I believe that people are not, and can not be illegal
.
.
.
What Gives Me Hope The potential of the human race.
* I am given hope when we, as humans, come together and put our differences behind us to make the world a better place.
* The decline in the number of traditional orthodox religion adherents and the rise of secularism, esp. among the younger generation, gives me a great deal of hope for the future.... A future hopefully based on logic and reason rather than fear and conjecture.
If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by Yes, I know this exceeds the office of mayor, but if you're going to dream, dream big, right?

I would make education free and accessible to everyone. An educated society is strong, productive and profitable. "Students who acquire large debts putting themselves through school are unlikely to think about changing society. When you trap people in a system of debt, they cant afford the time to think."
-Noam Chomsky

Implement a maximum wage based upon an income percentage of the lowest paid employee.
* Note, you are still free to make as much profit as you wish. You are not however, free to profit off the back breaking labor of your employees without just compensation and care.
YOU MUST SHARE THE WEALTH WITH THOSE WHO MADE IT POSSIBLE.

Rework our justice system so that our incarcerated can earn their way back into society and face less stigmatism from past transgressions. If you continue to treat people as criminals after they have served their sentence, and you don't rehabilitate those same people, they are going to return to crime and feel justified in doing so.
*Remove the profit motivation from our penal systems and end the prison industrial complex.

Legalize all drugs. Our current system makes criminals of otherwise decent people and forces them to a counter culture where they are more likely to find trouble and less likely to seek and find the help they need to overcome the issues surrounding their dependency.

Adequately look after our military veterans who have given so much. Whether you agree with the military campaign or not, our service men and women deserve more than we are giving them.
* We should not put our nations soldiers in harms way if we are not prepared to look after them physically and psychologically after their service is done.
**Each day approximately 22 veterans take their lives due to inadequate care, so before we get all gung ho about our next "Great War", lets take some of that 'surplus' money were itching to burn and look after those who have given so much.

***That being said, I believe that too often the notion of “supporting the troops” is used to further an agenda that leads to unjustifiable wars and untenable policies at home and abroad. I think too much emphasis is placed on building a military apparatus around a culture of violence, fear and conquest cultivated and at the behest of corporate interests.

And while I’m on the subject, can we please stop referring to them as our best and brightest? I think that is insulting. They are not our best and brightest. They are , for the most part, unwitting victims of an economic structure that systematically keeps a large segment of society at the service of the ruling class. Poor education, substandard working conditions as well as housing and services, along with low wages contribute to an atmosphere where the family unit is pushed beyond reasonable sustainability, leading to broken families and broken communities. With no hope of advancement and no hope of any reasonable future, many young Americans find that the only option they have is a de facto conscripted military servitude. The oppressive nature of the financial burdens placed on American citizens by a sociopathic upper class lead to a climate of desperation, ripe for the military to plunder the working class and the poor as the fodder for their next dubious campaign.

***Implement mandatory licensing, registration and insurance of ALL firearms.

What/who changed my life and why Authors who have had an impact on my life; Carl Sagan, Douglas Adams, Christopher Hitchens, Kurt Vonnegut, Daniel Dennett and Steven Hawking. All of whom have helped me to see that we are not small, we are not pathetic little creatures beholden to an unjust imaginary creator. But rather we are the masters of our destiny, capable of reaching vista not imagined by the lowly creators of gods . Through their works, and the works of many others, I have been helped to feel less alone in this world.

Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them - that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.
-Lao Tzu

Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less.
-Marie Curie

We are at the very beginning of time for the human race. It is not unreasonable that we grapple with problems. But there are tens of thousands of years in the future. Our responsibility is to do what we can, learn what we can, improve the solutions, and pass them on.

Just because your voice reaches halfway around the world doesn't mean you are wiser than when it reached only to the end of the bar.

The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it.
-Neil deGrasse Tyson

When I was five years old, my mother told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down happy. They told me I didnt understand the assignment, and I told them they didnt understand life.

-Stephen Hawking

The people in charge, globally, are maniacs. They are maniacs, and unless we do something about it these people are going to deprive us of a future.
-Thom Yorke

Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming -Wow! What a Ride!
-Hunter S. Thompson

We`re all going to have to learn to live together and develop a greater tolerance and get rid off whatever our fathers gave us in the way of hatred between nations.

New knowledge is the most valuable commodity on earth. The more truth we have to work with, the richer we become.
-Kurt Vonnegut

Isnt every human being both a scientist and an artist; and in writing of human experience, isnt there a good deal to be said for recognizing that fact and for using both methods?
-James Agee

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings. Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their own freshness into you, and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves.
-John Muir

I don't believe in an afterlife, so I don't have to spend my whole life fearing hell, or fearing heaven even more. For whatever the tortures of hell, I think the boredom of heaven would be even worse.
-Isaac Asimov

Recognize that the very molecules that make up your body, the atoms that construct the molecules, are traceable to the crucibles that were once the centers of high mass stars that exploded their chemically rich guts into the galaxy, enriching pristine gas clouds with the chemistry of life. So that we are all connected to each other biologically, to the earth chemically and to the rest of the universe atomically. Thats kinda cool! That makes me smile and I actually feel quite large at the end of that. Its not that we are better than the universe, we are part of the universe. We are in the universe and the universe is in us.
-Neil deGrasse Tyson

Every atom in your body came from a star that exploded. And, the atoms in your left hand probably came from a different star than your right hand. It really is the most poetic thing I know about physics: We are all stardust. You couldnt be here if stars hadnt exploded, because the elements - the carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, iron, all the things that matter for evolution and for life - werent created at the beginning of time. They were created in the nuclear furnaces of stars, and the only way for them to get into your body is if those stars were kind enough to explode. So, forget Jesus. The stars died so that you could be here today.
-Lawrence Krauss

The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one.
-George Bernard Shaw

We are all atheists about most of the gods that humanity has ever believed in. Some of us just go one god further.
-Richard Dawkins

Whether you believe that life evolved over billions of years or God made everything, you can't justify torturing an animal for a shampoo.
-Ricky Gervais

Some day, even the experts will figure out, that crime is not caused by rap music...or even my music, but by a power structure of self-absorbed property owners so brain dead and stupid they won't even see that if you're too goddamn greedy to pay taxes for schools and services, they're not going to be any good any more! And that uneducated time bombs are a very poor investment as a future work force. And if you go on teaching people that life is cheap, and leave them to rot in ghettos and jails, they may one day feel justified in coming back to rob and kill you.
-Jello Biafra

The degree of civilization in a society can be judged by entering its prisons.
-Fyodor Dostoevsky

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds.

-Morgan Freeman ....possibly

I'll play what you want or I won't play at all.
-George Harrison

When I say it's you I like, I'm talking about that part of you that knows that life is far more than anything you can ever see or hear or touch. That deep part of you that allows you to stand for those things without which humankind cannot survive. Love that conquers hate, peace that rises triumphant over war, and justice that proves more powerful than greed.
-Fred Rogers

Beliefs don't change facts. Facts, if you're reasonable, should change your beliefs.
-Ricky Gervais

The more clearly we can focus our attention on the wonders and realities of the universe about us, the less taste we shall have for destruction.
-Rachel Carson

Imagining the future is a kind of nostalgia. You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you'll escape it one day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present.
-John Green

People, I thought, wanted security. They couldnt bear the idea of death being a big black nothing, couldnt bear the thought of their loved ones not existing, and couldnt even imagine themselves not existing. I finally decided that people believed in an afterlife because they couldnt bear not to.
-John Green

What we don't understand we can make mean anything.
-Chuck Palahniuk

A Christian telling an atheist he is going to Hell is about as scary as a small child telling an adult they wont get any presents from Santa.
-Ricky Gervais

A lie can travel halfway round the world while the truth is still putting its boots on.
-Mark Twain

A fact never went into partnership with a miracle. Truth scorns the assistance of wonders. A fact will fit every other fact in the universe, and that is how you can tell whether it is or is not a fact. A lie will not fit anything except another lie.
-Robert Green Ingersoll

Letting go gives us freedom, and freedom is the only condition for happiness. If, in our heart, we still cling to anything - anger, anxiety, or possessions - we cannot be free.

-Chuck Palahniuk

To not believe in god is to know that it falls to us to make the world a better place.
-Sam Harris

We live in a society absolutely dependent upon science and technology and yet have cleverly arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a clear prescription for disaster.
-Carl Sagan

"If we dont believe in freedom of expression for the people we despise, we dont believe in the freedom of expression at all."
- Noam Chomsky

I say to the grown-ups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world that is completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, thats fine, but dont make your kids do it, because we need them. We need scientifically literate voters and tax payers for the future.
-Bill Nye ......The science guy.

Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science.
-Charles Darwin

One has no right to love or hate anything if one has not acquired a thorough knowledge of its nature. Great love springs from great knowledge of the beloved object, and if you know it but little you will be able to love it only a little or not at all.
-Leonardo da Vinci

When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.
-1st Corinthians 13:11

The desire for guarantees that our values are eternal and secure in some objective heaven is perhaps only a craving for the certainties of our childhood.

-Dave Brubeck

We believe in the inherent dignity of every human being, a dignity that no earthly power can take away. Central to that dignity is freedom of religion, the right of every person to practice their faith how they choose, to change their faith if they choose or to practice NO FAITH AT ALL, and to do this free of persecution and fear.
-President Barack Obama,

-An anonymous Tralfamadorian

Happiness is the only good.
The time to be happy is now.
The place to be happy is here.
The way to be happy is to make others so.
-Robert Green Ingersoll

Look again at that pale blue dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam.
-Carl Sagan

We build on foundations we did not lay. We warm ourselves at fires we did not light. We sit in the shade of trees we did not plant. We drink from wells we did not dig. We profit from persons we did not know. We are ever bound in community.

-Jane Goodall

Maybe you who condemn me are in greater fear than I who am condemned.
-Giordano Bruno

Prejudices, it is well known, are the most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilized by education; they grow firm there, firm as weeds among stones.
-Charlotte Bronte

Unless good people stand up to be heard, then fear and cruelty will always dominate the world.
-Yusuf Islam *(Cat Stevens)
* ....A good quote albeit a little bit ironic.

Man is a Religious Animal. He is the ONLY Religious Animal. He is the only animal that has the True Religion --several of them. He is the only animal that loves his neighbor as himself and cuts the throat of his neighbor if his theology isn't straight. He has made a graveyard of the globe in trying his honest best to smooth his brother's path to happiness and heaven....The higher animals have no religion. And we are told that they are going to be left out in the Hereafter. I wonder why? It seems questionable taste.
-Mark Twain

[On the Environment] We all have a stake, equally. Because if we do not save the environment and save the Earth, then whatever we do in civil rights or in a war against poverty will be of no meaning, because we will then have the equality of extinction and the brotherhood of the grave.
-James Farmer

A Few Words From Our Founding Fathers On this being a "Christian Nation"

The civil rights of none shall be abridged on account of religious belief or worship, nor shall any national religion be established.
-James Madison
*Page 451 The Annals of Congress,
House of Representatives
First Congress
Session One
June 8, 1789

Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law.
-Thomas Jefferson,
February 10, 1814

If I could conceive that the general government might ever be so administered as to render the liberty of conscience insecure, I beg you will be persuaded, that no one would be more zealous than myself to establish effectual barriers against the horrors of spiritual tyranny, and every species of religious persecution.
-George Washington,
letter to the United Baptist Chamber of Virginia
(1789)

Congress has no power to make any religious establishments.
-Roger Sherman,
Congress
(1789)

To argue with a man who has renounced the use of reason is like administering medicine to the dead.
-Thomas Paine,
The American Crisis No. V(5)
(1776)

In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.
-Thomas Jefferson
Mar 17, 1814

Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, then that of blindfolded fear.
-Thomas Jefferson

Persecution is not an original feature in any religion; but it is always the strongly marked feature of all religions established by law. Take away the law-establishment, and every religion re-assumes its original benignity.
-Thomas Paine,
The Rights of Man
(1791)

The way to see by faith is to shut the eye of reason.
-Benjamin Franklin

I contemplate with sovereign reverence that act of the whole American people which declared that their legislature should 'make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof,' thus building a wall of separation between church and State.
-Thomas Jefferson,
letter to the Danbury Baptists,
Jan. 1, 1802

The Government of the United States is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion.
-John Adams

Our civil rights have no dependence on our religious opinions, any more than our opinions in physics or geometry.
-Thomas Jefferson

Christian establishments tend to great ignorance and corruption, all of which facilitate the execution of mischievous projects.
-James Madison

There is nothing which can better deserve our patronage than the promotion of science and literature. Knowledge is in every country the surest basis of public happiness.
-George Washington,
address to Congress
(1790)

History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance of which their civil as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purposes.
-Thomas Jefferson,
Dec. 6, 1813.

In every country and in every age, the priest has been hostile to liberty. He is always in alliance with the despot, abetting his abuses in return for protection to his own.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp! cries she
With silent lips. Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!
-Emma Lazarus

***Let us not be so quick to forget that we are all of us immigrants to this land, and that it is the diversity of worldly cultures which has made this a great nation for all who have chosen to reside here.

-T. S. Eliot

Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside a dog, it's too dark to read.

-V.S. Naipaul

If chimpanzees have consciousness, if they are capable of abstractions, do they not have what until now has been described as `human rights'? How smart does a chimp have to be before killing him constitutes murder?
- Carl Sagan

The problems we face did not come down from the heavens. They are made, they are made by bad human decisions, and good human decisions can change them.
-Bernie Sanders

Time ripens all things; no man is born wise.
-Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra

It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change.
