This is a poem I wrote, inspired by the excuse I've often heard from others, "I'm just one person. Whether I do something or not, it won't make a difference." I disagree, and I believe this shows my views on why "just one person" can.
One Person By Amber McMahan, 9.25.2008
If one person can't make a difference, how, then, did we harness light? Who helped us realize our dream to take flight? If one person can't make a difference, how, then, did we capture sound? How do we meet that special someone who turns our whole life around? If one person can't make a difference, who revolutionized our world of art? And how can one person steal your breath or your heart? "I'm just one person," I've heard several say, "I can't make a difference now, anyway." Where would we be tomorrow, or even today, If everyone else were to think that way? Don't act upon the probability of your negative contemplation, But on the possibilities of this, and future, generations. One person can't make a difference. Beethoven's masterpieces never were writ. What do you think would have happened if Einstein had quit? Who unlocked the nature of the planets and stars? Who gave us bicycles, trains, or cars? If one person can't make a difference, where did we get all our great poets? If you feel you can't make a difference, but don't try, how will you know it? Our own thoughts can limit us, and quite often, that's all; If you feel you can't stand, then surely you'll fall. But if one person can't make a difference, just like one rock with billions makes land; If that one person joined with billions, they may find that, together, they can.
I'm a lazy perfectionist, if that makes sense. Things have to be perfect, especially in my home and work (I'm an eco-conscious housekeeper), but I'm often too tired to perfect my home. I can be quite motivated when I'm passionate about something. For example, I have become quite passionate about the environment, and our impact on it, and I have made changes in my job and my lifestyle to reflect my feelings. I also encourage my family and friends to become more environmentally aware.
