"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover" -- MARK TWAIN
"This soldier, I realized, must have had friends at home and in his regiment; yet he lay there deserted by all except his dog. I looked on, unmoved at battles which decided the future of nations. Tearless, I had given orders which brought death to thousands. Yet here I was stirred, profoundly stirred, stirred to tears. And by what? By the grief of one dog." --Napoleon Bonaparte, on finding a dog beside the body of his dead master, licking his face and howling, on a moonlit field after a battle. Napoleon was haunted by this scene until his own death.
Aerodynamically, the bumble bee shouldn't be able to fly, but the bumble bee doesn't know it so it goes on flying anyway.
"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life...Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."
Each time a person stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, these ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.
~ Robert Kennedy ~
"They came first for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the the trade unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time, no one was left to speak up." - Pastor Niemoeller on speaking of Hitler & the Nazis
“The ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children.” Anand Singh
Pretty low maintenance. I'm not a girly girl in the sense that I have had the same purse for the last 4 years, I have about 8 pairs of shoes that I wear often, and I buy clothes for comfort and not for label. I drive a Hyundai and try to live simply. I am in the "clean sweep" mode of my life where I am cleansing my life of "stuff" and keeping with me only the things that have meaning.
I've had the opportunity to assist in rehabing a red-tailed hawk, a bald eagle, countless birds, ungrateful squirrels (who DO bite the hand that feeds them!), mischievous raccoons, gentle rabbits, fuzzy flying squirrels, and a whole score of wild creatures at a rehab facility in WA state.
My Philosophy
People who don't like animals are people not worth knowing.
Don't be afraid that your life will end, be afraid that it will never begin.
To the world you might be one person, but to one person you might be the world
What Gives Me Hope
Waking up every morning to kitty kisses! Kindness of people who give of themselves. Children, especially when they care about others and the world around them instead of the next computer game or material thing they want!
If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by
That's a hard one -- I don't envy politicians as it seems even those who go in with high ideals get somehow corrupted by the system. I guess I would focus on poverty, universal health care, good paying jobs, protection of the environment, etc. Sounds like my plate would be full!
What/who changed my life and why
I was lucky to be given the love of nature for as far back as I can remember and I always remember that it used to be like pulling teeth to get any of us kids to come inside. My childhood nourished my sense of wonder and awe, whether it was catching tadpoles in the nearby pond (now a shopping center) and watching them grow into frogs and then letting them go back into the pond, making animal shapes out of clouds, making bird feeders out of gourds, watching the tiniest ant hills for hours, and watching bees pollinate and birds raise their young. I worry about many kids today that there is no connection to the earth, the world, and to all the people and creatures that inhabit it.
In the end, our society will be defined not only by what we create but by what we refuse to destroy.
-John Sawhill, past president of the Nature Conservancy
'Warren Buffet's take (more about how things should work) which I've always loved: "Let's say that it was 24 hours before you were born, and a genie appeared and said, 'What I'm going to do is let you set the rules of the society into which you will be born. You can set the economic rules and the social rules, and whatever rules you set will apply during your lifetime and your children's lifetimes.' And you'll say, 'Well, that's nice, but what's the catch?' And the genie says, 'Here's the catch. You don't know if you're going to be born rich or poor, white or black, male or female, able-bodied or infirm, intelligent or retarded.
"A True Conservationist is a man who knows that the world is not given by his fathers but borrowed from his childen." John James Audubon
"Humankind has not woven the web of life. We are but one thread within it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves. All things are bound together. All things connect." Chief Seattle
"There is pleasure in the pathless woods
There is a rapture on the lonely shore
There is society, where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar
I love not man the less, but nature more"
-- LORD BYRON
