What/who changed my life and why
My Dad.
My Dad was a Blinded WW2 veteran. Dad taught me that there was no such word as can't. He played music professionally for many years in the Northern Kentucky area. He taught stringed instruments for 42 years In Central Florida. He taught mentally challenged and people from churches for free. Many children and adults took music lessons from him. He taught those that wanted to learn how to repair instruments to do so. Many of his students went on to have carers in the music field from Country Music Artists to Opera Singers. I know that many of the teenagers stayed drug free and out of trouble with the police because of this caring man.
He also had a wood and metal shop. He made cradles for all the grandchildren and made beautiful furniture. He had lathes and callipers that would talk to him and many antique cars in the Tampa area have parts that were remade by Dad. He loved to read using Talking Books and gave others the love of learning. He surfed the net using the Jaws program by IBM(he helped IBM when they were developing the handicapped series).Growing up I remember going to the VA Hospital in Tampa and seeing the vets from Nam with only torsos having stretcher races down the hallways. In 1997 I had to have my left leg amputated and because of my Dad and the many Vets I knew my life was far from over. Dad passed his love of music down to myself and my daughters from Opera, Old Standards, Country and Rock. Some of my favorite memories are of Dad playing his guitar and singing to my Mom and I songs like Daddy's Little Girl and My Blue Heaven. Some of My daughters favorite memories are of Grandpa teaching them the Uke,Guitar and giving them singing lessons. 1 daughter is having her first child in September and is naming him after her Grandpa the other is honoring him by joining the Army as an MP.
Dad never bitter about losing his sight for his country. He never talked about the battles stating that only another soldier would understand. I remember many nights when he had nightmares and woke up with cold sweats. He down played his metals (for a start he had 4 Purple Hearts and a Silver Star). He taught me to LOVE and RESPECT The USA and the BRAVE Men and Woman who served this Great Country. He flew a flag in his yard and was very Proud To Be An American. My parents are both buried in Fort Gibson the Oklahoma National Cemetery. My Dad believed in the saying that any man can be a Father that it takes a special man to be a Dad. If it was not for this wonderful and brave man I would not be the person I am today. This is why MY DAD MY HERO!
