In a quest to understand why adopted adults share so many issues in common, as well as to understand why many non-adopted adults claim to share some of these issues (often as rationale to dismiss adoptee issues), the author set out in 1997 to determine the reasons for the commonalities.

What she discovered, after embarking on this quest, is that many of the issues are, indeed, not unique to those who had been adopted. Early in her research, she learned that the culprit for these issues was not specifically adoption, but separation – separation from mother at or soon after birth; not only literal, physical separation, but also psychological separation.

Fast forward to 2007, ten years of research later, the author lays out the disturbing trends in this society which contribute, at an alarming rate, to a cornucopia of problems. If not arrested or at the very least addressed, these disturbing trends will be what the author considers the fundamental contributors to the downfall of our civilization.
