A Real-Life Harry Potter

   Q:  Who is the "real-life Harry Potter"?

⇒ A:  His name is Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, and he was identified by His Holiness the Dalai Lama as one of Tibet's most important religious figures- the Panchen Lama.

   

Q:  Why is he a real-life Harry Potter?

 ⇒A:  Here are some parallels between Harry Potter and the Panchen Lama:

• Both were born uniquely placed to help their people: For Harry, the wizards; For Gedun, the Tibetan people.
• Both are locked up, by people not their own who are suspicious of their powers and their potential:  For Harry, the muggles; For Gedun, the Chinese.
• In both cases their own people need them.
• In both cases a special place is reserved for them in a kind of mystical school in which they need to be educated to develop their powers: For Harry, Hogwarts Academy; For Gedun, Tashilhunpo Monastery.
• Both have supreme figures of goodness in the background who refuse to fight evil with evil: For Harry, Dumbledore; For Gedun, the Dalai Lama.
• Both do not intially know their special powers.
• Both have been sent millions of letters...

 But here the parallels end.  Where in the books Harry eventually received the letters and learns his powers, in real life the Panchen Lama has not.

Q: What Can I do?

⇒A:  1. Inform yourself more about Gedun, the Panchen Lama, through www.savetibet.org or by reading Isabel Losada's book, A Beginner's Guide to Changing the World (www.isabellosada.com).

2. Promote awareness about the Panchen Lama at your local school, club, or place of worship.

3. Write to the Chinese government or to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ms. Louise Arbour, urging her to take action on behalf of the Panchen Lama.
