What Gives Me Hope	our capacity to recreate ourselves
If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by	Abolish the death penalty and abolish the three strikes rule. Organisations such as Reprieve,The Innocence Project and the Southern Poverty Law Center, do thorough investigations into cases (unlike the state) and frequently find that the so called evidence does not match the accused. Where there are legitimate concerns that the wrong person may be on death row an execution should never go ahead. If the initial investigations undertaken by the officials were as thorough as what is done by Reprieve, The Innocence Project and the Southern Poverty Law Center innocent people should not then be facing capital murder charges and the likelihood of ending up on death row. What is very concerning is how hearsay often takes the place of evidence. Hearsay is not evidence and often is untrue. There are countess cases where innocent people have been on death row for over twenty years and eventually the state has to admit they were innocent and lets them out. Often this is the result of the tireless work done by these human rights organisations. Sadly, for some innocent people the state goes on regardless and kills them. For those citizens who have money they can defend themselves with capable lawyers. But, who capably defends those who are poor? Certainly not the state lawyers. For those individuals who are a serious danger to society and where there is hard evidence of guilt they could be given life sentences with no parole, as an alternative to the death penalty. But so many who are not like that fall through the cracks in the system and remain there indefinitely. This needs to change and only pressure on the Government from its own citizens will make that happen.

Inspirations	I am proud to be a New Zealander, the resiliance of the human spirit, my kids, my mum, sunset, scent of rain on dry earth
