Seven years ago I rescued a pony that was destined for the slaughterhouse...A wise and beautiful palomino mare who had suffered at the hands of ignorant and cruel people. She had 'shut off' emotionally and had become defensive. The day that I first met her, she was standing miserable, on a piece of disused land in a housing estate, lonely and neglected, and the information I had learned about her future sickened me...she was due to go to slaughter. Why?? because she had bucked and bolted when someone tried to ride her, that's why. What a pathetic reason to take such a beautiful life.
So, I took her home....That was 7 years ago. It took a long time to gain her trust, but eventually she trusted again. She has never bucked or bolted!
Next came Alfie, sweet little Alfie, who had been beaten and starved, whose only intention was kindness, that had been returned with cruelty. He too, was due to be slaughtered, and he was so ill when he came to me, I was afraid he wouldn't make it. But he had a fighting spirit, and it won through. Now he and Candy live happily together. They are my angels, and I often wonder who saved who! Last Angel Equine Defence was set up to help unwanted horses and ponies, like Candy and Alfie to have another chance.
