Since the New Deal, Republicans have been on the wrong side of every issue of concern to ordinary Americans; Social Security, the war in Vietnam, equal rights, civil liberties, church- state separation, consumer issues, public education, reproductive freedom, national health care, labor issues, gun policy, campaign-finance reform, the environment and tax fairness. No political party could remain so consistently wrong by accident. The only rational conclusion is that, despite their cynical "family values" propaganda, the Republican Party is a criminal conspiracy to betray the interests of the American people in favor of plutocratic and corporate interests, and absolutist religious groups. _________________________________________________________________ The repuglican congress was held accountable by the people of this land. Soon this criminal president and his administration will face a similar fate.
Robert William Ney (born 5 July 1954) is an American politician from the U.S. state of Ohio. On October 13, 2006, Ney pled guilty to conspiracy and making false statements in relation to the Abramoff scandal and faces a maximum of 10 years in prison as well as fines. A Republican, Ney has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1995. Ney represents Ohio's 18th congressional district in the southeastern part of the state. Despite the seriousness of the corruption convictions, Ney has to date refused to resign from Congress. Prior to the Jack Abramoff investigations, Ney was best known for his work on the election reform efforts founded in the wake of the confused 2000 voting in Florida, and his support and backing for the "Stand Up For Steel" crusade and resulting laws. Ney also gained notoriety when he mandated, as Chairman of the Committee on House Administration, that "french fries" be renamed "freedom fries" on House of Representatives food service menus, to indicate displeasure with France's lack of support for the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Before his own guilty plea, Ney was identified in the guilty pleas of Jack Abramoff, former Tom DeLay deputy chief of staff Tony Rudy, former DeLay press secretary Michael Scanlon and former Ney chief of staff Neil Volz for receiving lavish gifts in exchange for political favors. On 15 September 2006, the Justice Department filed Ney's guilty pleas to a charge of conspiracy to defraud the United States and to a charge of falsifying financial disclosure forms. Both charges are related to actions taken on behalf of Abramoff's clients in exchange for bribes, as well as separate actions taken on behalf of a foreign businessman in exchange for over $50,000 in gambling sprees at foreign private casinos. Ney is the first member of Congress to admit to criminal charges in the Abramoff investigation, which has focused on the actions of several current and former Republican lawmakers who had been close to the former lobbyist. From 2000 to 2006, Ney was Chairman of the House Administration Committee. As chair of that committee, he oversaw operations in the Capitol complex and was sometimes known as the "Mayor of Capitol Hill". His temporary resignation came in the face of allegations in the Abramoff scandal. On 18 May 2006, the House Ethics Committee announced an investigation into bribery allegations against Ney. On 7 August 2006, Ney announced that he was withdrawing from the 2006 election race.
Mark Adam Foley (born September 8, 1954 in Newton, Massachusetts) is an American politician who served as a Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 until 2006, representing the 16th District of Florida. Foley resigned from Congress on September 29, 2006 as allegations surfaced that he had sent sexually explicit instant messages to Congressional pages and former pages, including some who were minors. As a result of the disclosures, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement opened investigations of the messages to find possible criminal charges. The House Ethics Committee has also opened an investigation into the response of the House Republican leadership and their staff to earlier warnings of Foley's conduct.
Thomas Dale ‘Tom’ DeLay (born April 8, 1947) is a former member of the United States House of Representatives from Sugar Land, Texas, the former House Majority Leader, and a prominent member of the Republican Party. In the early 2000s, DeLay helped to coordinate efforts to redistrict congressional districts in Texas to favor the election of more Republicans. In 2005, a Texas grand jury indicted DeLay on criminal charges that he had conspired to violate campaign finance laws during that period. DeLay denied the charges, saying that Democratic District Attorney Ronnie Earle's actions were motivated by partisanship, but Republican Conference rules nonetheless forced DeLay to resign temporarily from his position as Majority Leader. In January 2006, under pressure from fellow Republicans, DeLay announced that he would not seek to return to the position. In the months before and after this decision, two of his former aides were convicted in the Jack Abramoff scandal. DeLay ran for re-election in 2006, and won the Republican primary election in March 2006. In April 2006, citing the possibility of losing the general election, he announced that he would withdraw from the race, and resign his seat in Congress. He resigned on June 9, 2006.
Jack A. Abramoff (born February 28, 1958) is an American political lobbyist, a political activist and businessman who is a central figure in a series of high-profile political scandals. Abramoff himself pled guilty on January 3, 2006, to three criminal felony counts in a Washington, D.C., federal court related to the defrauding of American Indian tribes and corruption of public officials. The following day, on January 4th, he pled guilty to two criminal felony counts in a Miami federal court related to fraudulent dealings with SunCruz Casinos. On March 29, 2006, he was sentenced to five years and 10 months in prison, the minimum allowed per the plea bargain, and ordered then to pay restitution of more than $21 million. Abramoff is currently free in order to testify in a related investigation involving the Florida gang-style murder of SunCruz Casinos owner Konstantinos Boulis and to continue cooperation with investigations related to federal lobbying and related activities.
Randall Harold ‘Duke’ Cunningham (born December 8, 1941), usually known as Randy or Duke, is a Vietnam veteran and a former Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from California's 50th Congressional District from 1991 to 2005. Cunningham resigned from the House on November 28, 2005 after pleading guilty to accepting at least $2.4 million in bribes and underreporting his income for 2004. He pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiracy to commit bribery, mail fraud, wire fraud, and tax evasion. On March 3, 2006, he received a sentence of eight years and four months in prison and an order to pay $1.8 million in restitution.
William Harrison "Bill" Frist (born February 22, 1952 in Nashville, Tennessee) is a Republican U.S. Senator from Tennessee. Since 2003, he has served as Senate Majority Leader. He is frequently mentioned as a potential candidate for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination. Bill Frist will not seek reelection in the upcoming 2006 elections. On September 20, 2005, the Associated Press reported that Frist sold his HCA shares, which had been in a blind trust, two weeks before the company announced that earnings would not meet expectations, which caused a substantial drop in the share price. A spokeswoman said that Frist told the trustee who managed his HCA shares to sell them on June 13, and Frist had no control over the exact date when they were sold. Frist further claimed that the order was given to avoid allegations of conflict of interest over his participation in healthcare legislation, and that he possessed no non-public information when the stock was sold. The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York has issued subpoenas to investigate the sale, and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating. Frist has retained the Washington, D.C. law firm of Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr to defend him in connection with these investigations. In September 2005, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, named Frist as one of the thirteen most "corrupt" members of Congress, and filed a complaint with the Senate Ethics Committee calling for an investigation of the stock sale, an alleged cover-up, and an allegedly mishandled disclosure of a campaign loan. Frist denies any violation of campaign finance laws. Friust's spokesperson said Frist has no formal relationship with HCA, he is not an "insider", and that SEC investigations of sales in advance of important announcements are routine.
The U.S. Senate, in all its splendor and majesty, decided that an "enemy combatant" is any non-citizen whom the president says is an enemy combatant, including your Korean greengrocer or your Swedish grandmother or your Czech au pair, and can be arrested and held for as long as authorities wish without any right of appeal to a court of law to examine the matter. If your college kid were to be arrested in Bangkok or Cairo, suspected of "crimes against the state" and held in prison, you'd assume that an American foreign service officer would be able to speak to your kid and arrange for a lawyer, but this may not be true anymore. Be forewarned.
The Senate also decided it's up to the president to decide whether it's OK to make these enemies stand naked in cold rooms for a couple of days in blinding light and be beaten by interrogators. This is now purely a bureaucratic matter: The plenipotentiary stamps the file "enemy combatants" and throws the poor schnooks into prison and at his leisure he tries them by any sort of kangaroo court he wishes to assemble and they have no right to see the evidence against them, and there is no appeal. This was passed by 65 senators and will now be signed by President Bush, put into effect, and in due course be thrown out by the courts.
It's good that Barry Goldwater is dead because this would have killed him. Go back to the Senate of 1964 - Goldwater, Dirksen, Russell, McCarthy, Javits, Morse, Fulbright - and you won't find more than 10 votes for it.
None of the men and women who voted for this bill has any right to speak in public about the rule of law anymore, or to take a high moral view of the Third Reich, or to wax poetic about the American Ideal. Mark their names. Any institution of higher learning that grants honorary degrees to these people forfeits its honor. Alexander, Allard, Allen, Bennett, Bond, Brownback, Bunning, Burns, Burr, Carper, Chambliss, Coburn, Cochran, Coleman, Collins, Cornyn, Craig, Crapo, DeMint, DeWine, Dole, Domenici, Ensign, Enzi, Frist, Graham, Grassley, Gregg, Hagel, Hatch, Hutchison, Inhofe, Isakson, Johnson, Kyl, Landrieu, Lautenberg, Lieberman, Lott, Lugar, Martinez, McCain, McConnell, Menendez, Murkowski, Nelson of Florida, Nelson of Nebraska, Pryor, Roberts, Rockefeller, Salazar, Santorum, Sessions, Shelby, Smith, Specter, Stabenow, Stevens, Sununu, Talent, Thomas, Thune, Vitter, Voinovich, Warner.
To paraphrase Sir Walter Scott: Mark their names and mark them well. For them, no minstrel raptures swell. High though their titles, proud their name, boundless their wealth as wish can claim, these wretched figures shall go down to the vile dust from whence they sprung, unwept, unhonored and unsung.
Three Republican senators made a show of opposing the bill and after they'd collected all the praise they could get, they quickly folded. Why be a hero when you can be fairly sure that the court will dispose of this piece of garbage.
If, however, the court does not, then our country has taken a step toward totalitarianism. If the government can round up someone and never be required to explain why, then it's no longer the United States as you and I always understood it. Our enemies have succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. They have made us become like them.
The time has come for liberals, progressives, and other good people of conscience to abandon their notions of pacifism. Our opposition is not pacifistic and they never will be. Their first instinct is violence. They have no problem with the hypocrisy of simultaneously being pro-life and pro-war. They see things only as black and white, or right and wrong. They are intolerant of any viewpoint the differs from their collective own. They even believe that killing innocent human beings is a perfectly acceptable means of furthering their agenda. The majority of them actually enjoy the killing. It's like a sporting event to them. They find it thrilling. They justify it in the name of decency. Their twisted theocratic ideology allows them to do so. “Nuke ‘em”, they loudly proclaim, and they actually mean it.
Liberals, progressives, and other free-thinking and intelligent people should start arming themselves for the new revolution. For the new civil war. Arming themselves with the tools of conflict while they still can. Arming themselves with the knowledge of tactics and procedures while the resources are still available. Arming themselves with certain skills and strategies before this government eliminates their access to them. American citizens must realize that their constitutional rights are under attack , being systematically eliminated by a criminal and unrepresentative government.
With the overwhelming approval of this unrepresentative government, you can now simply be labeled an enemy combatant, subsequently apprehended and kidnapped by the authorities, and imprisoned without any recourse. They can place you to rot in the gulag without ever facing your accusers, without a trial, or even the hope of one. There will be no notification of your friends, family, or next of kin regarding your sudden disappearance. There will be no visits from representatives of humanitarian organizations. There will be no semblance of hope for your release. They will torture you whenever they please.
If we don't prepare to oppose this criminal government, and their operatives and confederates, using their very own tactics, which means violence, then we are doomed to failure. Doomed to subordination, subservience, slavery, and ultimately doomed to false imprisonment, torture, and death. We must be strong and we must demonstrate to them that we are capable of both defending ourselves and launching our own offensives.
People are going to start disappearing. People that you know and love; simply for what they say and believe in. This government will do this without hesitation. They exploit every situation they are provided. We must be ready to respond properly. We are now officially in a police state and our government is now unconstitutional and criminal. American citizens are being surveilled without warrants. American citizens no longer possess habeas corpus. The Geneva conventions have been abandoned and torture is now acceptable prisoner treatment. The very benchmark of our democracy has been forsaken, with electoral fraud now commonplace.
As set forth by the founders of this once great nation, we must now be prepared to come to the aid of our country.
"Experience hath shown, that even under the best forms of government, those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny." Thomas Jefferson
"Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph." Thomas Paine
"The strongest reason for people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." Thomas Jefferson
"Do not separate text from historical background. If you do, you will have perverted and subverted the Constitution, which can only end in a distorted, bastardized form of illegitimate government." James Madison
“When once a republic is corrupted, there is no possibility of remedying any of the growing evils but by removing the corruption and restoring its lost principles; every other correction is either useless or a new evil.” Thomas Jefferson
Don't believe anything that George W. Bush says. Time and again he blatantly lies to Americans and to the people of the world. This is habitual, tourettes-like lying. He and his administration are psychologically incapable of telling the truth. Even when Bush fell off his bicycle at his ranch, they lied to the press, saying that the ground was wet and slippery, when in fact the Crawford area hadn’t had a drop of rain in weeks. This is abnormal, deeply sick and mentally ill, repetitive, habitual lying.
The 2006 congressional elections will consume Bush and his conspirators. Between all of the graft, corruption, and outright criminal activity by this republican congress and the bone-headed blunders of the Bush administration, you can extrapolate that 30-something % (and ever dropping) approval rating into a landslide democratic victory in November.
Consider the continuing revelations of:
Massive deception leading to war in Iraq and the desperate quagmire that it has become, dismissing the Geneva convention and torturing prisoners of war, supporting the selling of several US port operations to a terrorist-friendly Arab governmental corporation, the pork laden Energy Act that rewards big oil while they price gouge at the pumps, the Medicare debacle that plagues our seniors, routinely censoring and manipulating the press, the horrific and devastating environmental policies, the continuing tax cuts for the rich, falsified pseudo-science promoting non-scientific theories, no plan for the impending avian flu pandemic, stacking the courts of the land with unqualified radical ideologues, our declining public infrastructure, preparing to repeal Roe v. Wade, the debilitating deficit spending that is destroying our future, the recurring social security privatization nightmare, the recurring Arctic drilling nightmare, the latest moronic health care proposals, the declining standard of living for all working people, NAFTA and CAFTA job outsourcing, NSA illegal warrant less wiretapping of the American people, rubber-stamping the civil liberty killing Patriot Act again, strolling hand-in-hand with and smooching the Saudi prince, the widespread union busting, the pathetic and criminal Katrina and Rita disaster response (or lack thereof to this very day), the massive no bid contracts to Haliburton and subsidiaries, endless partying vacations in Crawford by a moronic, unelected, poor excuse of a president, a drunken vice president shooting a hunting partner, a drunken vice president outing a CIA agent, A drunken and psychotic vice president promoting endless warfare, Abramoff lobbyist scandals, DeLay corruption scandals, Frist insider trading scandals, Cunningham corruption scandals, Mark Foley sexual preditor attrocities, repuglican speaker of the house Dennis Hassert's subsequent cover up, Bob Ney pleading guilty to felonious conspiracy charges yet failing to resign from congress, and so on and so forth. Honestly now, have you ever seen such a criminal mess in your whole life!?!
The restoration of the balance of power, starting with a democratic majority in Congress, will assure Bush’s lame duck status prior to his impending impeachment, subsequent removal from office, and criminal prosecution for war crimes in front of the world court.
Are you mad as hell how our country is being run? Have you stood on street corners with banners decrying your opinion? Or are you so frustrated that you think "what the heck"?
Do you fear your single vote makes no difference in the inevitable outcome anyway?
Are you tired of your home or business insurance escalating faster than your paycheck? Or that you can't afford to heat your home or drive your car? Are you frustrated that your representatives vote lock-step with their party regardless if they're in agreement or not?
Are you outraged that we no longer have any checks and balances; no more oversight; no one watching to safeguard our rights? Does it rile you that the men and women we voted into office signed away our civil liberties without even reading the documents they were signing?
Are you livid with the doublespeak of your representatives? Do you wish you could hang some of them by the you know what's? Are you screaming mad at the obvious manipulation of gasoline prices? Does it upset you that more than 40-million men, women and children can't afford medical care and have no insurance?
Does it get your goat that we are no longer a respected power but reviled around the world? Or that we remain dependant on oil or that we've allowed our environment to be violated and defiled? Are you mad that your children and grandchildren will inherit a senseless debt that will affect their lives and their livelihoods?
Does it irritate you that college is no longer affordable and that low-cost school loans are memories of the past? Does it exasperate you that pre-emptive action has replaced diplomacy? Does it bother you that nothing you said or did made one iota of a difference in the eyes and ears of our president and our legislators? Are you incensed that the corporate entity has become the ruler of the land?
Do you sometimes fantasize about arresting the son of a gun who decided it was okay to keep the child abuser, wife-beater, graft-taking, unresponsive, irresponsible, out-of-touch with reality legislator in office?
Are you disgusted that as a nation we now stand for torture, and dissolved the law of Habeas Corpus? Does it sicken you that we've replaced dignity with abusive use of power, or that we've allowed our principles that set us apart to completely disintegrate?
Does it turn your stomach that instead of using our intelligence and vision to secure a better future for humanity that all of our tax dollars earmarked for research and development are squandered by the whim of the military industrial complex in securing a better bomb of destruction?
Does it concern you that our language has been diminished by the use of meaningless words and expressions? Does it baffle your mind that we have accepted lies as truth; that we have permitted historical revisions as fact?
Are you enraged that we've devolved from a highly educated populace to among the lowest in the world? Or that the average American employee works more hours, with less pay and less time off than any other powerful nation?
Does it infuriate you that our legislators argue over stem cell research, the meaning of marriage, and the right of woman to determine what's right for her body and her life? Or that they've separated us and defined us as either red or blue rather than fostering our commonalities?
Are you rankled by the notion that our forefathers' standard of separation of church and state has become null and void? Are you shocked that in our land of the free you've become fearful of speaking your mind when you disagree with the sentiment that "You're either with us or with the terrorists"?
Does it get your gall that homelessness and destitution exists in our land? Or that our natural resources are declining with such ravenous acceleration that we may see the demise in our lifetimes? Does it bother you that precious animals will become extinct without any regret or action to save them or that drinkable water may soon be more valuable than gold?
Does it disturb you that the real threat of global warming is ignored by our elected officials?
Does it concern you that FEMA, Homeland Security, CIA, FBI are monoliths of inadequacy?
Does it gnaw at your gut that Social Security is held in the balance dangerously teetering at the fancy of our elected representatives? Or that millions of citizens are at risk of having no financial security in their elder years?
Are you scared that our representatives have lost touch with the working class? Are you terrified that because our legislators have allowed pensions to be plundered by American corporations that the precedent will become an acceptable practice?
Does it petrify you that your job may be the next job outsourced to a third world country? Are you shocked that the men and women you voted into office approved the laws that gave the right to American corporations to greedily fill their coffers at the expense of the American worker?
Does it make you ill that lobbyists buy our legislators' vote? That their allegiance is to the almighty dollar? Do you feel as if you've been sold a bad bill of goods? Do you yearn for the days of whistleblowers, patriots, and men and women of conscience?
Are you terror-stricken that our republic as we know it is crumbling before our eyes? Or that dirty tricks, conspiracies, corruption, falsification, lies, cleverly scripted metaphors and plots have become business as usual in our houses of representation?
Do you fear that liberty and all that it stands for is lost to us; and hence, our children and their children will never know the true meaning of freedom?
Where are the voices compelling our elected representatives to do the right thing? Have we become so self-involved in our daily lives, in making the mortgage payments and putting food on the table that we've lost sight of our very important rights of citizenry? If you've said yes to any these questions then you are part of a greater consciousness. You are among the growing number of American citizens who beg for change, who will no longer accept the status quo. So, what do we do?
If you are mad as hell and tired of taking this anymore then we need to ban together and in a collective scream oust every sitting elected official. Together and only if we come together in a single voice, can we send our message loud and clear to those in office, and those seeking office, that we are not going to sit idly by and allow our civil liberties, our inalienable rights, and our humanity to be mocked and abused?
It is time, actually, way past time, that we clean house. Elected office is not a gift; it's not a lifetime ticket to the best club in town. It is a profoundly important responsibility. A responsibility to do the right thing; to remove one's personal aspirations and inclinations and vote with a clear mind and conscience, with a worldly heart, and for the better good of all.
We need to send all our representatives home; the good and the bad; the baby with the bath water is the only way our message will be heard. It is time we took back our right of citizenry.
It is time we spoke our minds and reaffirmed that it is "we the people" who our elected officials are answerable to.
The time has come to sharpen the guillotines.
______________________________________________________________ A friend of mine wrote me and said, "These neo-conservatives are scary". I wrote him back and said, " Well, yeah. But besides that they're delusional. They're paranoid. They're psychotic. They're antisocial. They're homophobic. They're xenophobic. They're self-righteous. They're hypocritical. They're pathological liars. They're violent. They're repressed. They're criminal. And that's just for starters".
I just try to be a decent human being and world citizen.
What Gives Me Hope
