25 % of women will be sexually assaulted on a college campus.
12 % of women will be raped while in college.
66 % of women in the military REPORT sexual assault
27 % of women are REPORTED raped in the military
BUT……
Sexual assault remains a pervasive problem for women in the military, including those currently deployed overseas. The military's hierarchy is ill-equipped and unwilling to deal fairly with rape complaints.
AND what are they doing about it currently……………?
According to the Department of Defense's own statistics 74-85% of soldiers convicted of rape or sexual assault leave the military with honorable discharges (meaning the rape conviction does not appear on their record!). Only 2-3% of soldiers accused of rape are ever court marshaled. And only 5-6% of soldiers accused of domestic abused are ever court marshaled. In fact several multiple homicides have recently taken place on military bases that have not even been criminally prosecuted!
Department of Defense's definition of Morale Booster, for male soldiers:
FEMALE SOLDIERS
Take as needed, dispose when finished and continue serving with 'honor'
Please remember………… Many suffer in silent shame. Never forget.
Each year hundreds of servicemen and women are sexually assaulted by their fellow soldier, airman and shipmates while serving in the United States Military. Many are faced with constant humiliation, re-vicitimization and even loose their job simply because they reported the assault All while the assaulter continue on with their careers without any punishment.
The Coast Guard: A female who is still serving in the United States Coast Guard been sexually assaulted by her shipmate. Upon reporting the crime commited against her she was told that she will be unable to advance in ranks until the investigation was complete. She was later told that since reporting a fellow shipmate goes against the core valued of the Coast Guard that she would be discharge from the military.
She spoken to the "support" that was offered to her on base such as the work-life staff and they told her that she is forbidden there would be no need to get "the media involved because the Coast Guard would get bad publicity"
She contacted a lawyer via the legal department of the Coast Guard but she found nothing but discouragement from trying to press charges against her rapist. She left the lawyer's office without any success. Her rapist has not been punished and is still serving in the United States Coast Guard.
The Army
SPC Suzanne Swift was sexually assaulted by her command while deported in Iraq. Upon returning to the United States she was told of a redeployment in the upcoming weeks. She decided to risk going to prison by going AWOL instead of going back to Iraq and get raped again by members of the United States Army. She was captured and was sent to prison where the Army tried to negotiate with her by telling her if she signs a statement saying that she was never raped that they will drop all charges of AWOL. She refused so they stripped her from all ranks and threw her in prison. Her rapist has not been punished and are still serving in the United States Army.
May 30th, 2007 is the first ever Military Sexual Trauma and Sexual Assault Awareness Day. We must try to change the way the military deals with sexual assault allegation and give each and every past, present and future survivor the rights that they deserve and put each criminal behind bars.
Wear your yellow and teal ribbon on May 30th to show support for our troops serving in the United States Military. They put their lives on the line everyday to give us freedom but who would give them freedom and hope when the unthinkable happens? Remember this is happening to both men and women! Support them all.
