All of our animal children have been rescued in one way or another--an African Grey abandoned by his original owner, a feral kitten that had been repeatedly attacked and injured who is now quite happily a pampered, indoor cat, and, of course, our dogs...
Rescue shelter dogs make the best companions. We are the proud moms of two such magnificent souls, Sadie and Jake, both pictured above. Jakey was abandoned by an abusive owner and had completely given up on life by the time I found him slumped down on the floor of a Pennsylvania shelter in 1996. He was unresponsive and morose, unlike most of the dogs clamoring in their small kennels to attract some attention their way. All he needed was unconditional love...and he gave it in return in abundance. He overcame the emotional trauma of his previous life and, though he required almost constant care from medical conditions that resulted from years of abuse and neglect, he touched my heart and spirit in ways no other living being ever had or ever could.
We adopted his sister, Sadie, from a shelter in Las Vegas in 2000, the spring after Jakey's passing. At only a year and a half old, she had already been abandoned at the shelter three times prior and, to this day, we can not fathom why. Naturally, she seemed skeptical about us at first. After all, no home had been permanent for her before and her last residence left her wounded with bite marks from other large dogs that had attacked her. Those injuries have long since healed and Sadie is the most exuberantly happy--and comical--dog you could ever meet. She loves to play and dance and cuddle and, like her brother, she has learned love and trust and affection. We couldn't love either of them more if they were our own human children.
But millions of other companion animals around the world are in need of permanent, loving homes. Please visit your local shelter today and see how you can help. If you're in Northwest Washington, the Alternative Humane Society of Whatcom County, a no-kill organization, is currently in need of animal foster homes, event volunteers and more, as well as adoptive parents for many wonderful animals. You can find them at http://www.alternativehumanesociety.org ...donate, volunteer or simply join their mailing list and support upcoming events and fundraisers.
Wild Fact #1: Dog hair is my primary fashion accessory.
Wild Fact #2: I am inching slightly ahead of the dinosaurs in terms of modern living. Like the prehistoric critters, I have never used a cell phone--but, unlike them, I have seen one. There have been dinosaurs on television, but never one to own a television. Mine is small, fits on a shelf (not a whole wall) and is never used for television viewing, only an occasional DVD. The last time I played a video game, Atari was at its pinnacle of popularity and the T-Rex roamed free, devouring Pac-Man along with all the little ghosts...and everything else in its path. And, with only slightly more vigor than those extinct dinos, my dial-up connection transported me for fourteen years lethargically into the modern age of cyberspace; only in 2009 did I switch to high-speed.
Wild Fact #3: Our family regularly recycles paper, plastic, glass, memorable movie lines, and ridiculous puns.
Wild Fact #4: I'm a lifelong "black sheep" and proud of it.
Wild Fact #4 1/2: My beloved is allergic to wool but loves me despite --and because of-- fact #4.
Wild Fact #5: My office is a place of riveting conversations...even when there's but one living soul in the room.
Wild Fact #6: Crossword puzzles, dictionaries, and documentaries are exciting!!!
Wild Fact #7: I'd much rather commune with animals than converse with people.
Wild Fact #8: I freely use the word "married" to describe my relationship and not one uptight soul has fainted, contracted bubonic plague, suddenly turned queer, suffered an inexplicably great number of hangnails, or been driven to madness and/or divorce as a result.

If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by
Reduce the salaries of all elected officials to minimum wage. Of course this is purely theoretical, but imagine the empathy, the understanding of their fellow citizens; imagine the impact on legislation regarding every facet of our lives if these "public servants" truly were such and not the overpaid, special interest puppets, completely out of touch with the everyday realities of people throughout America and across the globe, that so many have become. Imagine the positive changes in health care access and costs, education, availability of affordable housing, new job growth, tax policy, foreign policy and, yes, even minimum wage. If only they, too, lived in the shoes of the average American and represented, firsthand, the needs and interests of the majority of us rather than the elite few. And, while we're at it, imagine what the money saved from their pay cuts could do to restore valuable public programs currently being slashed by federal and state governments. Who would run for public office only to earn minimum wage? Only those driven by a passion in their hearts to make the world a better place for ALL people, animals and ways of life. Bonus...we'd see a noticeable shortage of Republicans.

My beloved wife. She is my best friend, my soulmate and my daily inspiration.
