About me...

I am on a quest to ever grow and learn and am interested in forming a network of friends with whom to share the wonders, joys, trials, and tribulations of this amazing journey, as well as sharing resource and project ideas.

Why I liberated my daughter from Public School

My daughter was in the third grade in 2008-9.
The first half of the year the children spent math period doing addition and subtraction...again. After Winter break they began the math cram to prepare the children for the FCAT(the standardized test that determines school funding and whether or not the child passes) 2 weeks of multiplication 1 week division, 1 of algebra, 1 of geometry you get the picture. She has been bored for years. There was a time when she loved math; however, she came to hate it over the last 2 years.
In the first grade her teacher confided in me that she along with half of her class mates were undoubtedly gifted. This year I asked the teacher several times to put my daughter in the gifted program. I was told that she had social issues and because most of the work was group work she could not be in the gifted program.
Her social issue was that she was being bullied. Not only name calling but physical violence. I found my self in the school meeting with her teacher or the principal at least once a week. While her PE and music teachers were very aware, sensitive and responsive to her plight, her classroom teacher was not and often ignored it. When my daughter would try to report bullying she was told it was tattling, and was even threatened with losing her recess the only 20 minutes of freedom they give during the day.
At one meeting her teacher suggested perhaps she should be medicated. (Medicated for boredom) She also suggested altering her diet cutting out sugar and artificial colours. I informed her that we don't keep that kind of stuff in the house. I told her the problem is that they serve cherry and apple pies, white bread and chocolate milk for breakfast. And at lunch they can purchase popsicles, and a variety of cookies and cakes. She agreed. I did do and elimination diet to see where her sensitivities lie and also started her on DHA.
I have been told by several teachers who are friends of mine that she is definitely not ADD nor ADHD. She is 9 and bored. I was told that I had the right to demand that she be tested. And I did.
She had a couple of bad bullying incidents and we decided to pull her out. Even if it meant missing Field Day.

I would like to connect with other like-minded parents of unschooled or homeschooled kids for potential pen pals for my daughter. Children of other cultures and countries would be  of great value also.

On our Elderly
I have in the past worked with altzheimers patients. It is amazing the beliefs that people hold. I have seen caregivers who care too much too put their spouse in a nursing home, yet talk about them as though they were not there, as though because they couldnt walk or had lost most of their words, that their brains dont work. I have seen clients go from being happy to being crushed because their caregiver assumed that mothers day was just another day and she didnt know any way. It is time these people were given back their dignity and given the respect that they are deserving of.

If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by make all government offices unpaid the reward is what you can do for the country and perhaps the lack of pay would bring back the honor and honorable. And of course bring back bartering as a viable means of commerse as it would better the lives of so many people who can barely survive now.
