●●●“By placing women’s concerns and aspirations within a human rights paradigm, we have made an undeniable proposition: that women are human and that, on that basis, they claim and are entitled to the fundamental rights and freedoms inherent in all humanity.” Florence Butegwa “Women 2000: A Symposium on Future Directions for Women’s Human Rights” New York, June 2000 ●●●
Women in Sport demand the recognition of sport and recreation as a right for women and girls. Due to the structure of societal and family roles, women have little access to sporting facilities and opportunities. The interconnectedness of Human Rights should be borne in mind at all times.Limiting the enjoyment of women’s rights in one sphere affects their rights in another; this could be in education or health. Sport promotes health and well being, it is a platform for education and skills development. Limiting sport and recreation opportunities for women affects their right to education and health.
