Each sentient individual is a subject, the site of experience and the construction of meaning, and is entitled to life on its own terms. Each individual is also vulnerable to objectification and destruction by others, another fundamental fact of life. Reasoning animals may attempt to escape this antinomy, central to biological existence, but will pay a price for it; for some, that price of opposing their evolved nature is not sufficient to dissuade them.
