I have truly enjoyed and loved being a part of the Care2 Community, but I am leaving as of November 23, 2013.
Recent events and interactions within the Care2 Community have been the final straw for me, and I have decided to go back to not connecting by being 'friends', not sharing my personal info, and not participating in the community. I will be creating an anonymous account to continue my goal of signing worthy petitions, noting good news stories, and giving as much as I can to worthwhile causes.
To those I have messaged with, please know I have truly enjoyed it and valued your friendships, your conversation, your cards, your comments, your signatures on my few petitions, and your forwards, but I'm done. I'm sorry, and I will miss you more than I can express - I really, REALLY loved this site and its community, loved participating in it and getting to know people, but please know and understand I will not be replying to any messages.
For my full explanation keep reading, I babble and probably have bad grammar, but I wrote it out and re-read it and it says everything I care to say. If this message reaches at least one user, it was worth it.
Multiple times in the last several months I have read within the "message forwarding" and news communities dire warnings about 'bad' petitions and then the "Oh god I signed this one WHAT DO I DO" and then the "IF YOU SIGNED THIS AWFUL DIRE THING then here's how to fix it". One recently particularly incensed me for multiple reasons:
1. I do not understand people who run on automatic pilot and 'note' news stories without reading through or even clicking on the link. 2. I do not understand people who sign petitions on automatic pilot without reading the overview, and without seeing if there is actually a written petition to an effective target. (yes, when you are on a petition page you will see the following -- | overview | petition |. They are clickable.) 3. I cannot fathom being a Care2 user who falls into one of the above criteria and going back and ATTACKING THE AUTHOR OF THE PETITION FOR ONE'S OWN MISTAKE.
Yes, the author was attacked via messages, they and I have emailed, keep reading.
For this particular petition, I received about 10 fwd., fwd. OMG WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED, fwdfwdfwdFWDFWDfwd messages, all concerned with its horribleness. I read through the petition, it was about endangered and threatened animals in my state, a cause I care about. It was concerned and passionate but wasn't fully clear and used a few inopportune bits of language.
It seemed to send certain people through the roof. I was floored. They had noted the news story, signed the petition, then started sending messages to one another and commenting on articles like this person was literally carrying a gun and shooting animals and posting pictures about it.
I did some research into what might have caused it, and found two different online news articles that were false and misleading, and precipitated the writing of the petition. I sent the petition creator a heartfelt note to please not take all the messages they must be getting to heart, and to let me know if I could help clear it up.
I posted in the news threads to please stop the frenzy, bullying, anger and hatred spewing towards the poor petition creator, and let someone actually contact them.
The author replied, and heartily thanked me for being kind, let me know she was getting HORRIFIC messages via introductions and petition feedback, some people actually called her A MURDERER and a KILLER. She wanted to see what we could do to clear it up.
Then, I went back to the threads where I had asked people to stop for a minute and actually get a hold of the petition creator. There, by one of my own friends, I was told I WAS THE ANGRY, HATING BULLY.
Last straw, the number one thing I hate about this world - intimidating/being elitist/bullying/whatever you want to call it when adults act like they are in high school.
I cried, tried to get some focus but couldn't, and my reply comment was petty and childish. I said 'You Want ME To Be The bully - HERE YOU GO" and proceeded to pull out elitist/profane comments people had written (no names, just words) and have said goodbye. I don't really regret going lower, because that's the kind of crap the poor petition author was getting, and it felt a little nice to give people some of their own medicine.
If you have gotten this far, I ask you to take this to heart when participating in the online communities.
