This is a link to an extract from one of the greatest speeches of the 20th Century, by Robert Kennedy, while on a visit to South Africa

This is the full version of the speech

This is a link to one of the most inspirational songs of all time, Imagine, by John Lennon, a song for all people, for all time. This is John's original music video

This version is for a very touching performance of Imagine at the Closing Ceremony for the 2012 London Olympics.

For me, this is my favourite song of all time, The Rose. I have heard it hundreds of times and it never fails to raise a tear - or more. This version is by the incomparable Bette Midler who sung this version on the Oprah Show in 1995

This version is from the film of the same name, starring Bette Midler

Activist Aspirations Casual
Political Leaning Depends
Religions Buddhist Philosophy
Eating Habits Lots of water - no alcohol, Plenty of veggies some meat no beef, Organic when poss-no processed foods, No transfats-only natural fats olive oil, No sugar or HFCS etc-only stevia, No Wheat Corn Soya foods, Lots of onions garlic spices, Loves crispy foods mayo
Wild Fact About Me Definitely becoming a 'grumpy old man' - but leavened with a strong sense of humour.
My Philosophy Be tolerant of everything except intolerance. Only do to others what you would want them to do to you. Co-operation not competition. Discussion not slogans. Always be honest and never lie. Help the dis-advantaged when possible, who-ever and where-ever they are. Always remember that no-one in this world is better than you are but also remember that you are no better than anyone else in this world. Embrace diversity. That is all that really matters in living a moral and decent life, nothing else is important.
What Gives Me Hope 1) Science & Technology : most of it, though not all - the truth will always make you free even if it is sometimes mis-used. 2) Some individuals caring enough to protest injustice, intolerance, neglect and oppression in both the Developed and the Developing World. 3) People who look beyond the media/political/business hype and aren't prepared to accept the 'majority' or 'popular' or 'traditional' point of view when it is clearly or possibly wrong.
If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by Ensuring 100% transparency for all the activities of every organisation or group or business, and individual working with the general public, ie no lies, no hiding behind disinformation or false reporting, no secrets whatsoever with a very few minor exceptions such as for the fine details of some technical processes.
What/who changed my life and why One person/event/presentation can never be a life changer IMHO, life should be a continuum and a process of continual development and improvement. Never stop learning and changing.
What Bugs Me Anyone intolerant except of intolerance, Lies from Media-Politicians-Businesses, Arrogance of the Ignorant, Religious Extremism-Evangelising, Discrimination esp race-poverty-gender, Animal Rights Deniers-Exploiters, Climate Change Deniers-Polluters, Conformity

What Scares Me Climate change-environmental destruction, Outrageous nationalism/parochialism, Power of the military-industrial complex, BigBusiness control of Media/Politicians, People who like Fox News-Tyranny-Guns, People as sheep who blindly follow
Role Models Sorry - I don't believe in Role Models, at least for myself, There are people who inspire me, I will learn what I can from them, but they are who they are, I must not be a copy of anyone else, I must be 100% my own person
Quotation "Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumoured by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it." - Buddha

We already celebrated ours end of last month with a parade that the dogs are all dressed up in. It is a way for the town to raise funds for our local no kill shelters and bring awareness of the plight of animals, to increase adoptions, and now we even have a Greyhound Rescue in town......beads are thrown to the children the merchants have bowls of water out for the spectator dogs, some even have little biscuits to offer the dogs who watch the parade. Fun time for all and helpful too.

Thanks Arthur for the words of hope and encouragement. For those of us with Native American heritage, our New Year is in the spring based on lunar and for the rebirth of the growing season. Makes a bit more sense, however I guess the Roman God of Beginnings, Janus is what January is taken from so beginning of looking forward reflecting back. As Dominant Culture mostly in the colonized or western Countries use January 1st I offer the greeting. I will still be honoring a New Years beginning in the spring along with Iran that celebrates Nowruz
