Wild Fact About Me ex-Conservative who has seen the light and "changed his course"
My Philosophy US Economic Policy should return to the previous sound, logical, Demand-Side policies it used to embrace.
What Gives Me Hope When readers read my posts and agree with me and/or feel that they've learned something from what I've written.
If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by PRESIDENT: End ALL "free-trade" agreements and start over. Adopt populist economic polices & those of "Economic Patriotism." Adopt legislation & tax policies that keep jobs in the United States and that discourage outsourcing. Adopt strong PROTECTIONIST policies. Never forget that the function of the American government is to PROTECT AMERICANS CITIZENS, not just Corporate America. Adopt legislation & policies that put upward pressure on American wages. (i.e, reduce illegal immigration & outsourcing.) Cut government spending BEFORE cutting taxes. Pass a Balanced Budget Amendment. Cut spending in the most expensive areas first: Unnessary Defense Spending (i.e., unnecessary or non-functional weapons systems); halt ALL NASA spending; eliminate ALL government financing of HMOs; repeal the Prescription Drug Act; allow importation & re-importation of pharmaceuticals; disallow interest tax deductions (or credits) for interest on home equity loans, home refinancing loans, interest-only loans, or any other risky & creative loans that assist home speculators exclusively; repeal the tax cuts on the top 2%; tax capital gains income at the same rate as wage income, remove the $90,000 cap on Social Security taxes. Allow NO taxpayer money to go to any companies that produce ANY part of their goods in a foreign country. (Any company receiving $1 of government money for any branch of its operations cannot have ANY production facilities outside the U.S.) Put a strict timeline on complete withdrawl from IRAQ. Repeal the malpractice liabilty exclusion for HMO's. Mandate that ALL elections require paper ballots. Block as many corporate mergers as possible. Eliminate all policies/treaties/trade agreements that force American workers to compete with foreign slave-labor on the basis of wages alone. Dispel the fantasy that "education" will solve our international competitiveness problems, when the real issue is wage arbitrage. Direct our illegal immigration-enforcement efforts towards aggressively prosecuting employers who hire illegally. Offer rewards, or even citizenship, to illegal immigrants who assist in employer prosecution. Force Corporate CEOs to pay out of their own personal wealth when they bankrupt a company. Never, ever, allow the "I didn't know" excuse as a defense for corporate malfeasance. (Replace it with "I should have known, and therefore I AM responsible.") Increase the Earned Income Tax Credit to bolster consumer spending and demand in the lowest income groups. Increase gasoline tax enough to reduce consumption, but adjust accordingly if it excessively reduces consumer spending. Eliminate ALL dividend tax deductions, unless dividends are actually re-invested.
What/who changed my life and why Paul Krugman: His writings caused me to start re-assessing my own economic beliefs, resulting in my own self-discovery of the importance of consumer spending, demand, and aggregated demand, as well as the realizationg that investment does NOT create jobs, only DEMAND for production creates jobs.
