The Tibetans lined the road in 1959 as the Dalai Lama left. They chanted prayers as he passed & wailed, grief-stricken, when he'd gone. The pain of their separation was striking - from their country, brutally occupied by China since 1950 & from their leader, in exile in India. The Chinese have killed between 500,000 and 1.2 million Tibetans and destroyed 6000 monasteries. Tibetans are persecuted for merely owning a picture of the Dalai Lama. About 135,000 Tibetans live in exile, with an estimated 2500 fleeing their country each year. The woman was shot & killed while attempting a pilgimage with a group of fellow Tibetans; the killing was filmed: Chinese soldiers shoot Tibetan refugees at Mt Everest http://youtube.com/watch?v=hXC5RxhZUYw

If we could shrink the world's population to a village of precisely 100 people, while keeping all the human ratios exactly the same, it would look something like this:
There would be 57 Asians 21 Europeans 14 from the Western Hemisphere (North, Central & South America) 8 Africans
52 would be female & 48 would be male 89 would be heterosexual & 11 homosexual 30 would be white & 70 would be non-white 30 would be Christian & 70 non-Christian 6 would possess 59% of the village's entire wealth & all 6 would be from the United States of America
80 would live in sub-standard housing 70 would be unable to read 50 would be suffering from malnutrition 1 would be near death & 1 would be giving birth Only 1 would have a college education & 1 alone would own a computer
The above folks always put me in a good mood & never fail to make me laugh!
Men & Women I Love and Admire:
Simon Wiesenthal spent more than 50 years hunting Nazi war criminals, speaking out against neo-Nazism and racism & remembering the Jewish experience as a lesson for humanity. "When history looks back, I want people to know the Nazis weren't able to kill millions of people and get away with it."
Dr Vandana Shiva, Physicist, Agronomist, Activist: farmers' rights, biodiversity, seed sovereignty; no to Coke & Monsanto; no to the privatisation of water ! Among her best known books are: Staying Alive: Women, Ecology and Survival in India; Biopiracy: The Plunder of Nature and Knowledge; Stolen Harvest: The Hijacking of the Global Food Supply; &Water Wars: Privatization,Pollution, and Profit.
I'm a strange brew: one of my grandfathers, the son of Sicilian immigrants, ran a speak-easy during prohibition; one of my great-grandfathers was a German rabbi!
My Philosophy
What Gives Me Hope
People like Ignacio Chapela and other whistleblowers; Vandana Shiva's efforts to educate on biodiversity & GMOs; her seed bank & activism to save poor farmers from Monsanto.
If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by
What/who changed my life and why
"Etat de siège," film by Costa-Gavras, circa 1972, raised my political consciousness as regards foreign policy, underhanded manipulation and interference, freedom to dissent; opened my eyes to the role of my country in helping South American dictators torture their opponents, facts widely recognized abroad and refuted by compatriots.
Similarly, the orchestrated fall and death of Salvatore Allende, a 9/11 rarely remembered, and the frightening, barbaric repression that followed.
Also, Barbara Kopple's documentary, "Harlan County, USA," (1976 Oscar) about a coal-mine strike in West Virginia or North Carolina

Efficient use of the sun's energy is not necessarily a modern phenomena. Many centuries ago the Anasazi Indians of Southern Colorado found a way to capture the oblique rays of a winter sun. They simply built their stone houses against the south slope of canyon walls. The remains of their solar dwellings are still with us today.
"I'd put my money on the sun and solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait until oil and coal run out before we tackle that." - Thomas Edison
