House Bill 5114, hopefully to be named the "Children Need Both Parents" Bill has been introduced by Rep. Brian Calley. This happened yesterday, June 17.
We have a couple of pleasant surprises among our co-sponsors, Cindy Denby and Gail Haines. Thanks to those who persuaded those two ladies to side with us on this issue.
Too many others slipped through the cracks, though, folks. We have a total of 19 co-sponsors along with Rep. Calley, but only three Dems., LeBlanc, Dean, and Huckleberry. Three is better than last session, when Dean was the lone Dem. signing on.
HB 5114 has been referred to Judiciary. We have reps. Rick Jones and Justin Amash with us there in support. We missed three more there whom we should have had with us.
Nevertheless, the battle is now joined. Judiciary Chair Mark Meadows is against us, to put it mildly. The real work is now at hand. We have a job to do
Shared Parental Responsibility." In our work as women's advocates, how often have we heard custodial moms wish that their children's father would share the parental responsibility? Unfortunately, "shared parental responsibility" is the new doublespeak for joint physical
In all are states that in a custody dispute the judge must presume that joint custody is in the "best interests of the child" and "should be ordered." To make any other decision, a judge must make findings why joint custody is not in the children's "best interest." This is a high legal standard that makes it very difficult for judges to award any other custody arrangement. It is also a departure from the generally accepted standards determining what's in the best interest of the child.
I am a father that feels child belongs with his legal and biological father who obviously loves their child very much and refused to turn his back on his own flesh and blood, no matter what the odds against him. that to me is being a true father and a man for their child.
