No one else could have rallied and united our party more!! She wasn't my pick for VP. I was for Huckabee. When I first heard who McCain had chosen for his running mate I wasn't too pleased. I knew about Sarah Palin already. I fought her about a year and a half ago on the aerial gunning of wolves in National Parks in Alaska. I used my voice (I called her office, signed petitions, spread the word to others) and my wallet (I was a paying member of Defender's of Wildlife). I sent a letter to the Alaska Fish & Game Association. She gained my respect by yeilding to public pressure, then lost it a few months later by reversing her decision. I felt and still do very strongly about this issue. I think that pro-life should include ALL life. I am a vegan, that means I don't eat anything that comes from an animal and I do believe strongly in protecting wildlife and the environment. When her name first came up as a possible VP pick a few months ago, I told my wife, "No way!" Then I promptly forgot about her being the VP. And then, guess what? She is the "wild card" VP pick! I couldn't believe it. McCain surprised everyone! It took a while to register. I felt numb inside. My convictions said I couldn't vote for this woman. However, my wife got onboard with her rather quickly. I decided I would give her a fair chance and hear her out. I decided that I would listen to her acceptance speech and go from there. To tell you the truth, I was already starting to soften to her before the speech. But I listened to the speech and by the time she got half way through she had me!! The pundits were saying that she was going to have to deliver a home run speech to win over the conservative base. Well, SHE KNOCKED IT OUT OF THE PARK!!!!!
I am now a 110% supporter of Sarah Palin!! What about the wolves, her pregnant teenage daughter? No one is perfect. We all have faults and we all make mistakes. But the judgement you have to make is, is it overall good or bad? If you bite into an apple and there is a worm in it, does it make the whole apple bad? No, you cut the worm out and eat the rest of the apple. Well, politics is the same way. You very rarely get everything you want in a candidate. You have to take the good with the bad. So, I am willing to overlook the things I disagree with her on for the overall good of the country.
Although now I understand why she was allowing aerial gunning, I still don't like it. I am all for a humane way of dealing with the problem. Maybe they can move some of the wolves to less populated areas. But I don't know if that is possible because of the rugged terrain.
I am stubborn, but my mind can be changed. I respect Sarah Palin for being able to do that. I don't just roll over to what sounds good. I don't vote for popularity. I could care less what qualifications a candidate has or does not have according to the media. I research the facts and look at the evidence and allow my conscience to dictate my support and my vote.
