My Page Billboard

Retired academic historian specializing in the history of ideas, though I've also written on diplomacy, 18th. century exploration, and Flamenco. Love conversation and dialectical argument, but do not suffer fools gladly and do not take prisoners. Books and music, mostly classical, are central to my life. I read widely, but also deeply. Had an extraordinary musical education under the tutelage of Anton Webern's last private pupil -- an astonishing story lies behind  that. Intended to become a conductor, but a catastrophic chest operation ended that. History became my vocation, but as an avocation I'm a counsellor. I always counsel pro bono - not everyone can afford $50 an hour, and that's where I come in. Where people are concerned, I can sense whether they are good, bad or a mixture as quickly as  any dog. Perhaps significantly, I also bond with dogs extremely quickly. Maybe I used to be one. (-: With regard to the causes I partially list, I have a particular loathing of abusers of women, children, and animals. The same re corporatism and economism, which are bound up in the emergence of creeping fascism. These are complex issues with more tentacles than an octopus. So there's a very little about me. Feel free to ask if you want to know more.
