You would think it simple to talk about your own good qualities, your favorite this-and-thats, your passion about specific causes, political philosophies, and so on. But it isn't. It's easier to list one's bad "stuff" I think.
I love animals a lot, and feel so much pain when I hear stories of cruelty and abuse done to them by ignorant humans. There are times I'd rather spend with a group of kittens/cats or puppies/dogs than human beings. Pets are more fun, I think. There is no competition between human and animal. The dog or the cat just takes us as we are, no questions asked. That makes friendship between human and animal so much more comfortable.
I was very happy after I retired and still physically able to indulge myself doing volunteer work at the Humane Society shelter in my city. And then I had another two great days a week volunteering at "my" hospital, an enormous medical center which included a prestigious medical college. But arthritis and a stinky back problem put the kibosh on both volunteer projects --- the work at the hospital and the animal shelter was physically just a tad too much for my creaky old bones. lol
My daughter bought my first computer for me five years ago. I took to it like a duck to water.....right from the get-go I found myself mesmerized by the unbelievable scope of the Internet, and every year since that Christmas of 1999 I have continued to learn more about the "web", maintain my two sites (one is a blogpage). There is no end to learning something new!
I don' t read as much as I used to, before the peecee I'd average a book a week. Now, not so much. I used to sew my own clothes and my two daughter's things, but no more. No time for sewing anymore. Don't want to, anyway! How everything changes as the years go by. I would never have dreamed I would be sitting in front of a computer monitor for about 6 hours every day--sometimes more, sometimes less--and never run out of "stuff" to do at the P.C. besides "talking" to friends all over the country and a few in the U.K. right now.
I live in a "retirement community", the new term for big apartment complexes where us old folk live the easy life. LOL And it really is easy. We have a beautiful dining room in which to eat lunch or dinner, as we like. A big "activity room" with fitness equipment on one end, tables and chairs all over for parties and/or meetings. Whatever. A van to take some of us without cars to the grocery store or to various entertainment locales. Yes, "retirement communities" are the latest rage I think. It's pretty neat.
I am a political junkie. Voted Republican years ago but after 1979 I changed. Decided the Democrats were better for me personally (I wasn't rich enough to be Republican anymore). Discovered the women's movement and marched for E.R.A., marched and bellowed across the street from abortion clinics holding Pro-Choice placards. (The pro-life zealots had dibs on the front entrance of the clinics, with their rosaries and pictures of in-utero embryos to scare women out of going into the clinic to "murder" their child).
Found a happy home in the Democratic party. Ran for Alderman in my District in 1988, lost the primary by 59 votes. Went to the Democratic convention in San Francisco in 1988 and that sealed the deal for me and the Lefties.
After I got married in Germany to another member of the U.S. Air Force (he was simply "Air Force", I was a W.A.F., "Women in the Air Force".) Got pregnant and was discharged. Husband stayed pin the A.F. for 20 years and then retired from Air Force. We divorced in 1979 and my life, as I look back now, truly began. Thru no effort on my part I wound up working for the CIA in Investigative Forensics. That's about all I can say about that. Retired from "that" in 1993. And here I am.
Was a member of the WAF (U.S. Air Force), then worked for the CIA.
My Philosophy
To keep close to my heart the rage I feel for any human being who would abuse, neglect or torture *any* animal, or engage in dog or cock fighting, kill wild animals in barbaric traps so humans can wear coats that belong ON the animals, not humans, totally remove animal experimentation in labs to provide "safe" cosmetics for humans, outlaw vivisection, bear-baiting in Arab countries, the list goes on.
What Gives Me Hope
One tiny step for humanity. The PETS bill was signed by the "president", a no-brainer passage of a law that gives people the right to take their family pets with them in cases of emergency and/or evacuation. One of the only good things to come out of the Government's wishy-washy aid for helpless victims of Katrina (animals who had to stay behind in New Orleans).
If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by
~~~Stop building vehicles that use gasoline to run their cars, trucks, et al--no oil, only alternatives.
~~~Slap stricter air pollution emission laws on any company who spews noxious gasses into the atmosphere from their factories.
~~~Outlaw the manufacture of vehicles that exceed normal expectations of what constitutes a personal automobile (not including a truck) such as Hummers, huge SUVs and Vans, etc. Normal passenger cars only.
~~~No automatic citizenship for any newborn infant of an illegal alien from Mexico!
~~~Bring back the military services draft, for both men and women. Require military service be equal and mandatory for *every* young man or woman. Less wiggle room for "exemptions" from serving, also.
What/who changed my life and why
Any of those choices on that list would not be sufficient to change a life. There are far too many good things and good people in life to list in a small space.
