My name is Flora. I am a 24 year-old female African elephant, or Loxodonta africana to be exact. I was born in Zimbabwe, Africa, and was orphaned at the age of two, when my family was poached for their ivory. I was devastated and was not sure what would happen to me when I was brought to America and adopted by a circus.
I performed in the circus for over 18 years, and while an assortment of human and animal friends provided some sense of a family life, there we're no other elephants.
In 2001, I was adopted by a group of very nice humans who started Ahali Elephants, a non-profit organization to take care of me.
They moved me from the circus to Miami's Metro Zoo, where I could be with other African elephants until a permanent home was located.
Little did anyone know, that when I arrived from Africa as a baby, I stayed at the zoo in Miami for a month and so I already knew the elephants there! It was very exciting for me!
The nice humans tried to send me back to Africa, to the 2,200-square-mile Mkomazi Game Reserve in Tanzania, where another captive African elephant had been successfully reintroduced into a wild herd. The nice humans were introduced to the idea by Dr. Daphne Sheldrick, renowned for her elephant and rhino orphanage in Kenya.
But to everyone's disappointment the opportunity fell through. Although, I was secretly happy not to be going back to Africa -- then I wouldn't be able to see my nice humans anymore!
Fortunately, The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee, decided to expand their facilities from a 200-acre habitat to an enormous 2,700-acre natural habitat preserve where I could run, jump and play with other African elephants! They even have a HUGE pond I can swim in! I like using my trunk to snorkel!
The Sanctuary is sort-of like a very expensive permanent summer camp for elephants, that's what my nice humans say.
They're always concerned about raising something called money? I try and tell them not to worry, and offer them a trunk full of tree-leaves. This doesn't seem to help them, but what can I do?
Anyhow, Tange and Zula, two African elephants from Chehaw Wild Animal Park in Georgia, were the first African elephants to move to the Elephant Sanctuary.
Then, on the best day of my whole-life - March 3, 2004, which was also my 22nd birthday, I arrived at The Elephant Sanctuary and met new friends Tange and Zula!
It was so exciting!!! Anyways, I'm really happy here and very thankful to all the nice humans all over the world who have done nice things to make it possible for me to be at summer camp, oh, I mean The Elephant Sanctuary!
If I were Mayor, I'd make the world a better place by
Take all the human $ spent on keeping animals in unnatural attractions, like zoos, and spend it on maintaining animals in their natural habitats, thus also imapcting the local communities and economies.
