As far as the outlook of the universe is concerned, I have a perspective that Baruch Spinoza came up with a long time ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinoza. Basically, the only god(dess) that exists is the entire universe as a whole. This includes from all forms of pure energy and the smallest subparticles to the largest galaxies and the most powerful black holes and everything else in between (such as humanity).
From this standpoint, we are only dictated by the laws of physics and since we are a part of this universe (i.e. god/goddess), any form of scientific inquiry and discovery is a form of self realization.
With this in mind, the purpose of humanity is to better understand ourselves, our universe, and to honor the fact that we as individuals are all together equally a part of it.
