I live in Southern California and there are many areas in the desert where large sanctuaries for dogs/cats/rabbits etc can be built and I have no doubt finding people to run these sanctuaries would not be hard. California is full of animal lovers. Why aren't we creating shelters large enough to house many animals until they are adopted? I realize it takes money but let us NOT forget that Hollywood is here and full of people in the entertainment industry who would probably help out with money for this cause. Why aren't we doing more to educate the public regarding spay/neutering and microchips?? When you microchip an animal, you are not hurting it - if anything, you are saving and getting it back to his owner should it get out.
Homelessness/mental illness is another concern of mine. We need to rethink the issue of more institutions for people with serious mental illnesses. These are people who roam the streets and simply is not healthy for them. They belong inside a locked facility where they have a warm bed to sleep in and food to eat. Why are we letting them roam streets with shopping carts? Sleeping under freeway passes?? Everyone hates taking medication, me included but when you have a health issue which requires taking medication than you should take it. There are many mentally disturbed individuals out on the streets who just won't take their medication for their schizophrenic - bi-polar etc and don't we have a responsibility to make sure these people are taking care of themselves ? Won't harm others? Or themselves? This is America - there was a time when we did help the mentally ill - what happened?
