Food & Water Watch Tell BLM: Remove Wild Horse Habitat from Gas & Oil Development

The BLM Battle Mountain District in Nevada is known as "wild horse country" because it contains 12 wild horse and burro Herd Management Areas (HMAs), more than any other BLM office. The Battle Mountain District is asking for comments on the proposed auction of public land for gas and oil development leases. Of 139 land parcels to be auctioned, 13 overlap wild horse habitat areas. The agency has already eliminated 27 parcels from the auction in order to protect the endangered sage grouse. Now it's time for the BLM to take measures to protect wild horses as well.

Please click below to submit an email to the BLM telling the agency to withdraw the 13 land parcels located in HMAs from the gas and oil lease sale in order to protect our wild horses.

Tell BLM: Improve Little Book Cliffs Wild Horse Management Plan

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Grand Junction Field Office in Colorado is revising the Little Book Cliffs Wild Horse Range Herd Management Plan and is asking for public comments. This BLM office is already heading on the right path by working with local mustang advocates to implement humane, on-the-range management. Now the BLM must take the last step toward making the Little Book Cliffs' management program a model for other BLM offices by preventing future removals through the proper and adequate use of the PZP fertility control vaccine. Sadly, just last year the BLM removed 13 horses from Little Book Cliffs' small herd. Let's take this opportunity to make sure removals never happen again! Horses who are born in the Little Book Cliffs should have the opportunity to live out their lives there.

Please take a minute to submit your comments calling on the BLM to revise the Management Plan to establish the goal of no future removals from the Little Book Cliffs herd.

NEWS President's Budget Proposes Horse Slaughter Ban

The White House released the President's proposed budget for 2015 and we are happy to report that, once again, the Administration is proposing a ban on horse slaughter in the U.S. The budget keeps in place the ban on funding for U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspections of horse slaughter plants. The ban was reinstated this year with Congress' passage in January of the 2014 Omnibus Spending Bill. Without USDA inspections, slaughter plants cannot kill horses for human consumption.

"Wasting tax dollars on the cruelty of horse slaughter makes no sense, and we urge Congress to once again adopt this provision," said Nancy Perry, a senior vice president of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, an AWHPC coalition supporter. To read more about the President's 2015 budget, please click here

Mustang Awareness Featured at Wellington, FL Equestrian Events

This past weekend, attendees of the Wellington, FL Winter Equestrian Festival's Nation's Cup and Global Dressage Grand Prix Freestyle were treated to a wonderful mustang exhibition. Amidst some of the world's top riders, eventer and trainer Elisa Wallace turned heads as she rode her beautiful mustangs Fledge and Rune bit-less and bridle-less for a demonstration in the center ring. Wallace and her mustangs appeared in conjunction with the Wellington screening of the documentary film American Mustang, produced by key AWHPC supporter and wild horse advocate extraordinaire Ellie Phipps Price. The film's trailer played after the demonstrations, exposing two audiences of equestrian enthusiasts to the plight of America's wild horses. Wallace, a Georgia native, is pictured at left with Fledge in a photo by Tara Underwood. Special thanks to American Mustang for including AWHPC in the events and the film, and to Victoria McCullough for helping to promote the film in Wellington, and for everything she does for America's horses.

American Mustang is now screening in Houston and San Luis Obispo. For dates and locations, please click here

Dear David,

MoveOn is being threatened with legal action by the state of Louisiana after we bought a billboard criticizing Governor Bobby Jindal for preventing 242,000 Louisianans from accessing Medicaid.

In politics, a frivolous lawsuit or the threat of it—combined with a smart reaction—can be a golden opportunity. On the other hand, the wrong reaction can be disastrous. That's why what we do now—which is dependent on you—is so important.

Here's what happened: This week, MoveOn put up billboards in red states criticizing Tea Party governors for refusing federal funds to expand Medicaid. The billboards are working really well, and are getting a ton of press coverage.

Now, the Republican lieutenant governor of Louisiana wants us to take down a billboard criticizing Governor Jindal—who has presidential ambitions—because it's a takeoff on the state's tourism slogan, "Pick Your Passion." This is a blatant attack on free speech. A state government isn't entitled to use trademark law to censor citizens who want to criticize the state for its heartless and stupid policies.

The good news is, legal action like this can be a dream when it comes to focusing press coverage on the need for Medicaid expansion. If we take this on from a position of strength, unapologetically doubling down on our Medicaid campaigning right now—while preparing to vigorously defend ourselves against a potential lawsuit—we can score a big win.

On the other hand, if we let Louisiana Republicans bully us into silence, then we could face similar legal battles in every other state where we put up billboards. We're committed to standing up to bullies. But to do that, it's crucial that we have the resources to take this on and win.

Can you chip in $3?

Yes, I can contribute $3.

With your help, we'll expose these legal threats for the sham that they are, and leverage them to put even more pressure on Jindal and other right-wing governors who are refusing to accept federal funding for Medicaid—which is pure politics at its worst.

Under Obamacare, 100% of the costs of Medicaid expansion are covered by the federal government for three full years—and then 90% forever after that. There's no reason for any governor to say no—except for naked partisanship.

Now that we know this campaign is getting under Republicans' skin, the way to win this is to go all-in—by vigorously defending MoveOn against any potential lawsuit, doubling down on our campaigning, putting up more billboards, running more ads, getting more press, and doing what it takes to make our voices heard. In fact, this threat of legal action could be a golden opportunity: It could earn a ton of press for Medicaid expansion and shine a spotlight nationally on the real human costs of Republican extremism.

That strategy's going to cost money. But the cost of legal fees and ads could pale in comparison to the free publicity for Medicaid expansion from a baseless lawsuit.

Are you in?

Yes, I can contribute $3.

If Republicans think they can shut up MoveOn members with baseless lawsuits—they're dead wrong. MoveOn won't quit campaigning until we expose the full truth about the despicable human cost of refusing to expand Medicaid and all 50 states expand Medicaid. But we do need your help to defend ourselves—and keep our campaigning going.

Thanks for all you do.

Hello Friends of the Colorado River!

Great News!  On March 23rd, the gates of the Morelos Dam will open as the U.S. and Mexico restore a small streamflow to the Colorado River Delta.  Jennifer Pitt, representing the Environmental Defense Fund, has been a key stakeholder in this historic agreement.  We turn our weekly blog over to Jennifer for her editorial.  Enjoy!

Since 1960, the Colorado river has not flowed regularly to the sea. While pockets of green remain, the Colorado delta is a parched and begging for relief. The dry, sandy channel j-pittglares in the bright sun, abandoned by the river that has been overtapped and overworked for too long.

It's hard not to think of the lost potential of an ecosystem that once thrived. After an adventure there in 1922, American author, scientist and environmentalist Aldo Leopold wrote:

"On the map, the delta was bisected by the river, but in fact the river was nowhere and everywhere, for he could not decide which of a hundred green lagoons offered the most pleasant and least speedy path to the Gulf [of California]."

The Colorado's delta was once a landscape of plenty, the basis of rural economic activity and local employment. Tourism, recreational hunting, sport and commercial fishing — all have been lost to overuse and over-exhaustion of a limited resource.  For decades, it seemed nothing could be done. I spent much of the past 15 years shining a spotlight on the sorry state of the Colorado River delta for audiences across the country. And while it's true that those conversations would quickly turn to the byzantine complexities of water law and the difficulties of caring for shared cross-border resources, it is also true that most people are truly unsettled by the reality that the Colorado stops short of its natural destination.

Today, U.S. and Mexican policymakers, water agencies and conservation organizations are taking a major step to right the wrong that has been done to the Colorado river delta. For the first time in history, the United States and Mexico will send a modest volume of water into the Colorado River delta in the form of a temporary "pulse flow," which will morelosmimic the natural spring floods that once nourished the delta. Never before have we deliberately sent water below Morelos Dam — the last dam on the river just south of the U.S.-Mexico border — to benefit the environment.

Beginning this month, water from the Colorado river will literally pulse through the border as a sign to the rest of the world of what people can accomplish through cooperation between nations. It feels like a triumph of human optimism over acquiescence.

Some may grumble that this is not the time to send water to the environment, but that objection ignores the broader context of the recent binational agreement and the many benefits it brings to both countries. In addition to breathing life back into the delta, this new framework more broadly allows the United States and Mexico to share surpluses in times of plenty and reductions in times of drought, provides incentives for leaving water in storage, and conserves water through joint investments in projects from water users in both countries. These benefits extend to water users throughout the Colorado river basin — in all seven U.S. states feeding into the basin, and the two in Mexico.

By abandoning the old framework of "who gets what" and establishing cooperative management of our shared resource, the United States and Mexico are achieving benefits for communities and nature alike. With this kind of cooperation, I have renewed hope that in the not-so-distant future we will see delta ecosystems and economies thrive once again.

Dear David -
Today, Free Speech For People is submitting an amicus (friend of the court) brief to the Supreme Court in a case that will make you scratch your head.  In this case, a kitchen cabinet manufacturer is claiming that it has a constitutional right to disregard a legal requirement to provide its female employees with health insurance coverage for contraception, coverage to which they are entitled under the new federal Affordable Care Act.  The company’s theory?  It goes against the corporation’s religion.
Corporations are not people.  Our brief argues that the First Amendment right to the free exercise of religion is for real, live people—not corporations.
We’re proud to be joined on this brief by two co-signers: Auburn Theological Seminary, an institute committed to building the multifaith movement for justice, and Hollender Sustainable Brands, the manufacturer of Sustain, the first sustainable, fair trade condom in the U.S.
As Jeffrey Hollender, the founder and CEO of Hollender Sustainable Brands and founder of the Seventh Generation company, said so well in our announcement of this filing today:
“We all know that individuals, including business owners, enjoy the First Amendment right to the free exercise of religion.  But as any business leader will tell you, corporations are not individuals – they are purely economic, state-created entities and they do not practice religion.”
On March 25th, the Supreme Court will hear argument in this case, Conestoga Wood Specialties v. Sebelius, and its companion case, Sebelius v. Hobby Lobby, brought by the Hobby Lobby craft store chain.  This isn’t just about whether corporations can disregard the insurance coverage requirements of this new federal law.  The broader question is whether corporations will now try to extend the Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling to challenge other local, state, and federal laws, and threaten even further the basic promise of our Republic: government of, by, and for the people.
Businesses like Hollender Sustainable Brands understand that, along with the benefits of obtaining a corporation status, they must also uphold certain responsibilities.  In this case, these responsibilities include following the law under the Affordable Care Act.
That’s why we’re asking you to join us in signing this petition to tell Conestoga Wood Specialties, Hobby Lobby, and other corporations to STOP trying to twist the Constitution in their favor.

Click here to sign the petition.
Please forward this petition along to anyone you know who owns a business or believes businesses shouldn’t make employees and communities suffer because of corporate managers’ religious views.  These cases could have huge implications for our ability as people to make corporations follow common-sense laws about employee benefits, civil rights, and financial, workplace, and environmental safety.

It’s important to make your voice heard today.

Thanks for standing up with us!

Help legalize marijuana in New Mexico.

Take Action

Tell your senator to support your right to vote to tax and regulate marijuana in New Mexico.

Dear David,

Very soon your senator will consider new legislation that would pave the way for marijuana legalization in New Mexico.

Tell your senator to support your right to vote on marijuana legalization in New Mexico.

If this legislation is passed by both the house and the senate, New Mexicans like you will be able to vote to legalize, tax and regulate marijuana on the ballot this November!

People in our state should have a say when it comes to reforming our marijuana laws. And right now, you have a unique opportunity to make your voice heard because your senator is one of ten members on the Senate Rules Committee who will be deciding the fate of this critical legislation that would be the first step to legalizing marijuana in New Mexico.

Urge your senator to support legislation that would pave the way for marijuana legalization.

Taxing and regulating marijuana in New Mexico is our ultimate goal and is supported by more than half of all the people in our state.

But marijuana legalization will only happen if you and your fellow New Mexicans speak up. And the legislation being considered by the Senate Rules Committee is a crucial first step to making it a reality. But your senator will consider it at any moment -- and we need your help to move this legislation forward.

Time is running out. Pressure your senator to allow New Mexicans like you to vote to tax and regulate marijuana in our state this November.

Courage Campaign

Dear David,

Republicans are trying to score political points by claiming that is unsecure and therefore a threat to Americans’ privacy, but in fact, the biggest threat to the security of the healthcare exchange website is GOP Rep. Darrell Issa, the Chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee. An outspoken critic of the Affordable Care Act, Rep. Issa subpoenaed confidential documents from the federal contractor that built the healthcare exchange website -- including computer code and technical information.

If Rep. Issa leaks any of this confidential information, it could make the giant retailer Target’s recent security breach look like child’s play. The documents would provide hackers with a roadmap of how to attack the website, and would suffer “irreparable harm".(1)

Sign the petition to demand Rep. Issa keep these documents private!
Mr. Issa issued the subpoena with zero grounds to suspect any security breaches and refused to allow the website’s contractor to redact the most sensitive details, despite adamant warnings about the extreme security risks.(2)

Chairman Issa now has the documents in his possession. He has an unfavorable track record of leaking confidential and sensitive information -- including compromising the names of Libyans working with the United States, putting their lives at risk, as well as publicly exposing airport security breaches, and information from court-sealed wiretaps.(3) The Chairman has already released portions of the documents in a public letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and there is no telling what else he might reveal.

Show that you have the courage to speak truth to power and tell Rep. Issa: “Don’t jeapordize the security of!”

Rep. Elijah Cummings -- a ranking member on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee -- calls Chairman Issa’s actions, “a reckless and transparent attempt to frighten Americans away from the website and deny them health insurance to which they are entitled."(4)

This latest political stunt is just another blatant example of how right-wing extremists in Congress are willing to do whatever it takes at whatever cost -- in this case, the privacy and security of millions of Americans -- to concoct fear about the new healthcare law and to try to take down the President’s most prized achievement.

Tell Chairman Issa to stop playing politics with Americans’ privacy and healthcare!

Thank you for having the courage to protect Americans’ privacy,

Is the Oil and Gas Industry Using the Crisis in Ukraine to Increase Profits?
Tell President Obama It's Shameful to Use Ukraine as an Excuse to Export Fracked Gas

Are Oil and Gas Industry Profits Driving Our Foreign Policy?

Ban Fracking Supporter Outside of Whitehouse

It's Shameful to Use the Crisis in Ukraine as an Excuse to Increase Fracked Gas Exports!

Today’s New York Times¹ has a front-page story reporting on a major push in the Obama administration and by Speaker Boehner to increase exports of fracked gas in response to the crisis in the Ukraine. While events there are certainly disturbing, they should not be used as an excuse for ramping up dirty gas exports that will harm communities air, water and health in the United States.

Will you tell President Obama, Secretary of State Kerry and your members of Congress to reject dirty gas exports?

According to the Times, a major push to export dirty fracked gas is underway, led by “major oil and gas producers like ExxonMobil and Republican leaders on Capitol Hill.” Just last Tuesday, Speaker John Boehner called on President Obama to “dramatically expedite the approval of U.S. exports of natural gas.”

Yet according to the Times, the administration is already moving to advance a “State Department initiative to export American natural gas to Europe as a lever against Russia.”

One of the craziest things about this, is that the U.S. currently does not have the capacity to export large amounts of natural gas overseas, and so the claim that building out infrastructure to export fracked gas would help with the current crisis in Ukraine is just disingenuous. Long term, we need to invest in sustainable renewable energy, at home and abroad.

ExxonMobil should not be controlling our foreign policy, and we should not be sacrificing communities across the United States for illusory and short-term foreign policy objectives. Tell President Obama and your members of Congress that it's shameful to use a foreign crisis to promote the oil and gas industry.

Your voice is more important now than ever as this push for gas exports gains momentum. The same Times article reports that voices of those opposed to exports “have fallen to the sidelines in the rush” for greater exports.

Let the Obama administration and your members of Congress know that your voice to protect communities from fracking will not be silenced.

As a movement, we have made tremendous progress, but if the oil and gas industry get their way, ramped-up exports would drive even more fracking. Ironically, as fracking accounts for a large amount of climate pollution, increasing exports and accelerating fracking will actually lead to more long-term instability and global security issues. Tell President Obama and your members of Congress to protect our communities, not big oil and gas interests.

Big Food is shopping a voluntary labeling bill in Congress that would block states from passing meaningful mandatory labeling bills, redefine GE food as “safe” and even allow GE foods to be labeled as “natural.”

On the heels of the passage of mandatory genetically engineered (GE) food labeling bills in Connecticut and Maine, and the narrow defeat of the labeling bill in Washington State, the big food and chemical companies are going on offense. As Center for Food Safety reported last week [1], according to a draft bill outline leaked by Politico, the Grocery Manufacturers Association (GMA) is shopping a federal voluntary labeling bill in Congress that would block states from passing meaningful mandatory labeling bills, redefine GE food as “safe” and even allow GE foods to be labeled as “natural.” [2]

Tell Congress to Oppose Big Food’s GMO Labeling Sham!
Without mandatory labeling of GE foods, consumers are being left in the dark about the foods we are purchasing and feeding our families
. There is overwhelming public demand—consistently near 95%—for the labeling of GE foods.  Yet the U.S. is one of the only developed countries in the world that doesn’t require labeling; sixty-four countries have mandatory labeling policies for GE foods including South Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom, Brazil, China, South Africa, Australia, the entire European Union, among others. In 2013, over 50 GE labeling bills were introduced in 26 states, including Hawaii, Washington, Indiana, Missouri, and Vermont, with many more expected.

Action has already been taken at the federal level this legislative session: Representative Peter DeFazio (D-OR) and Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) have introduced legislation that would require nationwide, mandatory labeling of GE products.

So why would anyone introduce another GE food labeling bill? Because industry will do whatever it takes to make sure you don’t have the right to know whether the food you’re buying is genetically engineered. Voluntary labeling of GE foods has been allowed by FDA for more than a decade and not a single company has “volunteered” to label its products as containing GE food. There is no reason to think they will do so now, when there is more support for mandatory labeling of GE food than there ever has been.

The introduction of this bill would only serve to undermine state and federal legislation meant to grant consumers the right to know and avoid GE foods. Attacking state labeling laws does nothing to address the increasing call from consumers for transparent GE food labeling. Instead, it gives the biotech and food industries yet another free pass and keeps consumers in the dark.

Tell Congress to oppose the GMA bill that would block state GE food labeling, and instead to support the Boxer-DeFazio bill to label GE food.

Hands off Snowden!

Tell Secretary of State Kerry: Restore Snowden's Passport!
GRAPHIC: Sign here button

Today we’re giving a major boost to a pair of petitions in support of NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden. Please add your name to one or both.

RootsAction is getting ready to publicly deliver these petitions to officials in Washington. The more signers, the greater the impact -- as we reach out to news media everywhere.

Truth must be told: Edward Snowden’s “crime” was to educate Americans and the world about the dangerous growth of the U.S. surveillance state.

Last summer -- after Snowden released documents on the NSA’s mass surveillance programs -- the State Department suddenly revoked his passport in an effort to prevent him from reaching any country willing to grant political asylum.

Snowden didn’t get the due process he deserves.

Freedom to travel requires a passport. It’s a basic principle.

Tell Kerry to reinstate Edward Snowden’s passport now.

But returning Snowden’s passport isn’t enough. The U.S. government should make an ironclad commitment to fully respect his legal rights to seek political asylum.

You can send a clear message that insists the U.S. government must not engage in any abduction or other foul play against Snowden. Your name can go on this petition right now: Mr. President, Hands Off Edward Snowden!

You can also help by forwarding this email to people you know who care about civil liberties.

Thank you!

One night before what would have been Jordan Davis' 19th birthday, a Florida jury has resulted in a mistrial for his killer, Michael Dunn, on the count of of first-degree murder. Dunn, however, was found guilty on four charges — including three for attempted murder.

Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law set the stage for the injustice we've just witnessed — enabling Michael Dunn to kill Jordan Davis and not fully answer for that crime.

Sign the Petition

Our message to elected officials:

it's time to end "Stand Your Ground" and other Shoot First laws that undermine public safety, senselessly put people at risk, and enable the kind of tragedy we’ve witnessed in the case of Jordan Davis. I’m calling on you to take leadership and undo these dangerous laws now.

One night before what would have been Jordan Davis' 19th birthday, a Florida jury has resulted in a mistrial for his killer, Michael Dunn, on the count of of first-degree murder. Dunn, however, was found guilty on four charges — including three for attempted murder.

That's right — a white man killed an unarmed Black teenager and just got away with it, using Florida's so-called "Stand Your Ground" or "Shoot First" law as a deflective shield for this racially-motivated killing.1,2 It's a gripping comparison and a terrifying continuation of the injustice we saw with Trayvon Martin — with both murders taking place in the same state just months apart. We send our love to Jordan's family. While the jury was unable to adequately decide the fate of the man who killed their son, we hope that they will still find some peace.

Please take action to help prevent the loss of another Trayvon or Jordan. Join us to bring an end to "Shoot First" now.

In the years and months since Michael Dunn murdered 17-year old Jordan Russell Davis in cold blood at a convenience store in Jacksonville, his hostility towards Black folks has been made abundantly clear. In a letter to his daughter written from his jail cell while awaiting trial, he wrote, "This may sound a bit radical but if more people would arm themselves and kill these [expletive] idiots when they're threatening you, eventually they may take the hint and change their behavior."3 Although not submitted as evidence in the trial, these letters paint a chilling portrait of a man consumed by racial bias, exacting vigilante justice on an unsuspecting — and unarmed — Black child.

Nearly 111,000 ColorOfChange members have called for an end to these laws that undermine public safety and give murderers the opportunity to walk free. "Shoot First" emboldens people like Michael Dunn to kill when and where they see fit and unless we end "Shoot First" laws, we will continue to witness tragedies like the one that took Jordan Davis away from his family. As we accelerate our efforts demanding that state governments oppose and repeal "Shoot First", we'll also urge federal officials to investigate how these laws protect and embolden those who commit hate crimes.

Join us in seeking accountability for the murder of Jordan Russell Davis. Demand an end to "Shoot First" laws. And when you take action, please ask your family and friends to do the same.

Thanks and Peace,

And when the drums of war have reached a fevered pitch and the blood boils with hate and the mind has closed, the leader will have no need in seizing the Rights of the citizenry.
