the WSPA (World Society for the Protection of Animals) is petitioning the UN for the rights and welfare of animals.

"Help us reach 2 million signatures in 2008.
WSPA is joining hundreds of other animal welfare organizations around the world, urging the United Nations to adopt an international agreement on the welfare of animals. The "Animals Matter to Me" petition urges the United Nations to adopt a Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare similar to earlier initiatives on human rights and the environment. By signing the petition you will be conveying to your Government that animals – and their welfare – matter to you." ~WSPA

This could be very very big - where the officials and people who are in positions of "power" actually start to recognize animals as Beings and begin treating them as equals...
