In a world inundated with problems, greed and cynicism, where can the seeds of hope and salvation take root? In the idealism and commitment of todays youth. I revere young people who passionately care more about serving than worshiping at the altar of materialism; who have the courage to remain faithful to their convictions in an increasingly unfaithful world. Here, Ryan, fresh out of college and completely on his own, works as a volunteer in Uganda. The reward for such work is not found in what one gets for it, but what one becomes because of it. Volunteer work develops a lasting sense of interdependence and compassion that changes not only how we view our problems but how we view each other, and ultimately how we view ourselves. Paul Revere earned his living as a silversmith. But what do we remember him for? His volunteer work. For those of my generation whose idealism has become jaded over the years and have turned to raising families or advancing careers, it is well to be reminded every generation or so that social revolutions have always been started by such volunteers.
