"...We were lobbying for a ban on longline fishing. There was to be brought into the country a fleet of 23 longline fishing boats who were targeting sharks for fins. But the turtle got involved because a conch fisherman ran into the loggerhead turtle who had a longline hook in his upper palate which trailed a long piece of very thick monofilament line favoured by longliners. So the fisherman was able to capture him. He brought him to his pen in Queen's Cove (Bahamas). He was able to remove the hook as you will see from the photos. The loggerhead was emaciated from not being able to feed. The fisherman, Archie McBride, kept the turtle long enough to get the turtle eating and once he thought he was healthy enough he returned it to the wild back in our ocean on the north shore of Grand Bahama Island. Archie knew I was campaigning against the longline fishing so he gave me the photos and told me his story. I was able to use them in my speeches against longlining which after a long, involved battle we were able to stop at least in the legislation. I understand, unfortunately it still goes on illegally..."
