what she is wearing around her neck are protection necklaces. usually given by a monk to wear or the dali lama blesses string and when worn, one is protected. soldiers wear them and they believe it will keep bullets away from them during fighting. most tibetans wear them, as i was travelling a monk tied a knot in one and gave me one to wear. it was pink but now it is all white and i was very safe through out all my travels.
