Hi there - I am somewhat a messy gardener, and a newbie to lots of things. I like learning about individual plants more than making some kind of perfect frozen Portrait. For me - it's a Zen-workout. i relish both the sweat and mental health escape. It's a good thing to get dirty and cooperate with compost, thru all the changing seasons. A garden is a process - one that makes you lift weights, stretch, and do plenty of Yoga positions as you work. I grow about half my food now, and except for a quiet electric mower, prefer not to use power tools outdoors. I don't expect completion nor perfection when gardening - I am delighted when anything works out. I do it for myself, and for the simple pleasures that probably only I will notice. I give away lots of seed, tubers and plants every year, and volunteer in OPG's - other people's gardens. See my list at www.gardenweb.com in Member Exchanges: pdxJules - let me know if you want Garlic chive tubers, seed, or Yellow Plum scions.
Cut scapes from garlic and onions (not chives) right away -so energy goes into the bulb. Chop and eat in a salad or stir fry.

Dragon Arum - flower
I share the round tubers every Fall. DO NOT plant near a window or sidewalk - because flowers stink like rotting flesh! A very cool perennial tho.

Ground Cherry
Like the Tomatillo - this Ground cherry is a variety that forms papery pods, with small tart yellow fruit inside, about the size of a cherry. I plan to collect em unitil enuf to make JAM...as I hear it will taste like Apricot Jam. YUM!
