Water-soluble oils on canvas. I didn't know when I was creating the background that the individual shades wouldn't show unless the light hits just right on the canvas. I painted it with the sun coming in the windows behind me, so they were dark, but I could make out subtle differences. Only when I hung it on my wall did I notice the "extra" of the effect. Kinda cool...and that's saying a lot because I usually don't like my own work! I brightened the photo a bit so the background shows better, but maybe I should have left it darker.
