Amazon Community Animal Rescue, Education and Safety was founded in Iquitos, Perú in 2004. One of the most remote cities in the world (no roads lead there), this Amazon town and environs has no concept of responsibility towards domestic attitudes. Currently Amazon CARES operates MANY innovative and diverse programs to change the culture into a more compassionate one.

Veterinary Director, Dr. Esther Pena, is one of Peru's most accomplished Veterinarians.

After an extensive search we recruited Dr. Pena.

Pet owners wait in line for their pet's surgery/

Amazon CARES concentrates on free spay/neuter programs for under served communities and stray animals. This is our first activity focusing on families and their pets. 5 years ago, nobody would have turned up for this event!

Vet Tech Harry is also a master dog catcher!

Lacking many tools, animals are prepared for surgery by old fashioned barber shop style shaving. I couldn't do it! To an animal OR myself!!

Dr. Pena only licensed Vet for domestic animals in region.

Our Veterinary Director, Dr. Esther Pena, attended Veterinary school for an additional 2 years to gain a license in small animal medicine. She is the only vet in the entire Loreto region with this title.
