A simple tying stand was manufactured from 1/2 in copper tubing. While this has sufficed thru several wrapping jobs,I intend to make one of steel. The nakago shape was hammered from the same 1/2 in tubing and soldered togeather.A universal nakago could be made to fit many swords.Long, slender, with multiple mekugiana. The 2x4 upright just acts like a brace so the whole thing dosen't collapse under the tremendious downward pressure applied, when compressing/stretching the Ito across the handle. At any rate, some sort of jig to hold the tsuka is needed which will hold in one position, then be able to be rotated to the other side to work on that side. This provides a second set of hands when doing this project, and the small clamp provides another set.You will wish you had more sets as you progress! The clamp holds the ito in place at the last wrap, enabling you to work with the present wrap and make adjustments accordingly, for correct geometry ,placement of hishi-gami etc.As a note, this wrap took me 8 hours to accomplish with no breaks!I,m slow but it really did take that long.My hands throbbed for a day or so afterward, from working with the ito.Its been a year since I,ve wrapped this particular handle, and its still tight!
