The clamp acts as a second set of hands(more are required.)
The paper wedges(hishi-gami)were made from standard newsprint paper.Picked up a tablet at the local Drug store. The wedges are made by folding a sheet of newsprint paper(To the required dimentions)approx 10 to 15 times. The final shape of the wedges is layed out on this, and cut.One folded sheet of paper gives about 20 wedges.I think I used about 80 in all for the Tsuka. The dimentions of the wedges is found by stretching(compressing)the tsukaito over the tsuka, and measuring its width while tightly stretched. This is half the width of a single triangle. This provides about 2 nights of work, but then I,m slow!
Note also that I,ve covered both the top(mune)and bottom(ha)sides with the same newsprint paper.I,ve marked the individual width units of the stretched ito on both. There must be an odd number of width units for the knots to work out right.Marking the width units is a guide to adhear to while wrapping. The ito must be compressed or loosed enough to fit these marks. At any curvature you'll notice the change most,as well as at the mennuki.
