Hi all –
again, there have been many kilometers between blogalongs – I haven’t seen the ocean for months, but have still been concentrating on issues that have an eventual consequence to oceanic pollution. The Wadalba Association, an active residents group in the suburb I live in, has taken advantage of my local knowledge and voted me ‘Wadalba Wildlife and Cultural Heritage Caretaker’ which involves planning for minimum environmental damage in the ensuing development for housing in the area.

Apart from endangered, threatened, and species of special conservation significance, within the uncleared  native vegetation of Wadalba, there is an enormous cultural heritage from both the original Aboriginal inhabitants, and the European family that retained ownership of a substantial proportion of the development area.

This pic is of the sunset through the paperbark forest surrounding the small creek that  significant  axe and spear grinding grooves, and the Whale Dreaming Rock reside.

Some years ago I started to put together a report on the Aboriginal habitation remnants of the Wadalba area, and over the 7 years I have intensively studied this site, there have been many site indications and remnants that have been photographed and assessed.

In 1999, I had seen so many site locations within this complex, that I had informed the cultural officer, as well as a number of senior members and staff of the Local Aboriginal Land Council of my assessment of over 60 sites within the proposed development zone, and offered to show them my complete findings.

In 2000, an archeological study was undertaken within the development area over a period of three days.

The participants [or some of them] involved in this study, approached me at camp without warning, and asked about the sites that I had previously reported, and requested to see them.

They informed me they had a time limit and could not walk the complete area with me, and spent about two hours looking at seven sites, out of the approximately sixty, I then knew of.

Despite my request to show them the other sites, they never returned to finish.

The subsequent report indicated that despite walking the entire area, they failed to find any sites, and out of the seven I showed them, they disputed two.

Some time later, an Aboriginal relative, who was a member of three elders councils, and a highly respected Lawman and Ceremonial Elder requested to be given welcome to this country by an original Darkinung Blood  person, and asked permission to walk this land and survey for sites.

Permission was given by a Blood Darkinung, and we started the survey. We identified and photographed 24 sites before he had to leave, with intention to return to finish the survey.

Cancer intervened, and he insisted that I finish the survey we started, before he passed.

As it turns out, there are far more that 60 sites here, and the work is still not finished, with further archeological surveys required due to the significance of finds in late 2005 and early 2006.

At the moment, there are two files on this issue that are on line.

They are both substantial files, in PDF format, and full of photos and descriptions.

They are available at --   http://www.whalecall.org/index.php?page=docs.htm  and are to be found after reading the second item on the page.

In lieu of the usual pics in the blogalong, there are something like 120 pics in these documents.

Not recommended for dial-up downloads.
