With the Thanksgiving and holiday season approaching, the Illinois League of Conservation of voters would like to remind you to make all of your holidays environmentally friendly. There are several easy and affordable ways to make the season a little greener.
Here are some tips from the Environmental Defense Fund to enjoy the celebrations while ensuring the safety and protection of our environment:
Remember to buy food items that use the least amount of packaging. Find packaging that contains recycled, post-consumer content.
If there are a lot of leftovers after Thanksgiving dinner, use this holiday as an opportunity to start composting food waste, and consider donating extra food to a shelter.
When shopping for food, look for meat and poultry items raised without the routine use of antibiotics. With the USDA's new organic labels, holiday shoppers will find it easier than ever to select a turkey that is antibiotic free. Buying organic food is another way to protect your family and the environment from harmful chemicals like pesticides and preservatives.
Do not to use disposable utensils, plates, napkins or tablecloths during the holiday weekend.
When possible, buy locally produced foods so that less energy will be used for food transport, while supporting local farmers.
Because Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel weekends of the year, use public transportation to avoid traffic and minimize pollution. Carpooling is also a good way to avoid these problems while spending time with family and friends.
Because the earth has given us so much to enjoy during the Thanksgiving season, please remember it when planning and making your holiday meals. From all of us at the Illinois League of Conservation Voters, Happy Thanksgiving.
