Hi! Human Friends, My brothers and sisters asked me to bring up some concerns that rank very high with us, but very low with humans. The biggest one is litter boxes. When I interview new arrivals, a lot of them say they were brought to the shelter because they don't use the litter box. When I ask them why they didn't use them in their former home, but they use them here at the shelter, the answer is always is: "Your humans scoop the litter boxes every day, and they regularly wash them. In our old home, our humans either did not scoop them for a week or more, or they only scooped them superficially, so the urine stuck to the bottom and became too disgusting to even put a paw in the box." Another complaint I hear often is the state of their food and water bowls. You may think dry food is dry and just pour new food on top of the old one, but mold developes on the bottom, and it may make us sick. So please, wash the food and water bowls at least weekly. Here at the shelter they are washed every day. Another one of our peeves is declawing. How would you like to work and play with your first digits of your fingers and thumbs missing? Just imagine yourself using a computer keyboard or mouse, trying to play video games, picking up a hamburger...you get the idea. Yes, we do get used to it, but it is so unneccessary. If you play with our paws when we are small, we will get used to having our paws handled and won't put up a fight when you clip our claws. Now for the good news. Winter is almost over, and we are looking forward to having our windows open and lying in the warm sun again.* Maybe, with your help, we can get new windows in Gang. Sandy, our director says they are very expensive, but they won't let the cold air in, and the frames are made from something called vinyl which we cannot scratch to pieces. That's all for today, folks. Come and visit us soon and often. We love to have company. 'Til next newsletter. Charlie, Jr. *This newsletter is kind of old; I came across it while cleaning my bedroom. It is now June so hopefully the cats are enjoying the nice weather and people are stopping by and playing with the cats and kittens. I hope some are finding good homes with some of the visitors. Visitors may stop by to visit Thursday -Sunday noon to 4 pm at: Fried's Cat Shelter 509 Indiana Highway 212 Michigan City, IN 46560 (219)874-6932 Fax: (219)874-7566.
