Primary animal instincts in man:
Conservation, all vital functions and alimentation, territorial defense, reproduction, defense of the nuclear family.

Notion of eternity, the soul concept, capacity to love. These primary spiritual instincts continually collide with our primary animal instincts. That's why there are so many of us working in so many humanitarian and human rights organizations. When the spiritual instincts are more conscious, some claim for the defense of those who suffer and are discriminated.

Notion of eternity: Other animal species feel that "this is now and there is no other opportunity”. We feel that what we do, even daily, is forever. Eg: when we prepare ourselves to go out, when we plant a flower, when we say love, we always have the feeling that it is forever. Although the reality tries to tell us the opposite.

Notion of soul: We, good or bad persons, always feel that we are something more than what we see in the mirror and something else that goes even beyond of our intelligence and our mind. We carry in us the feeling that we are spirit apart of flesh, bones and psyche. This can be recognized by many and rejected by others. But this notion we can not avoid.

Capacity to love: We are able to feel love and mercy for others, not only for the members of our family, but we are capable of universal love and many of us need to act in some way to solve humanity problems without feeling superior.

Please note that this is a very tight synthesis of what I think we are as a species.
