Greater Outdoors Project Finalist:
For ten years, WildEarth Guardians has hosted Stream Team, a project that restores stretches of the polluted Santa Fe River by planting tens of thousands of native trees with community volunteers who gather pledges for each tree they plant.
In 2009, the Stream Team project seeks to coincide with Santa Fe’s 400th anniversary and efforts to restore the Camino Real—the pioneer road from Mexico City to Santa Fe, which runs alongside it.
In addition to restoring a historic 3-mile stretch of river, WildEarth Guardians will work with the local government to build a trail for pedestrian and equestrian traffic that will reconnect the community with its namesake river. The trail will include educational kiosks to inform and inspire visitors about how successful community-based restoration is at protecting habitat, improving water quality, and providing resiliency to climate change.
